Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019 750ml

A poised and compelling expression of Oakville terroir from Christian Moueix’s Ulysses Vineyard. The 2019 vintage is striking in its restraint, balancing the vintage’s natural power with elegance and finesse. Aromatics of red cherry, raspberry, and crushed mineral unfold into layers of tobacco, cassis, plum reduction, and baking spices. Silky yet structured, the palate offers medium to full body with velvety tannins, black tea grip, and vibrant acidity, leading to a savory, mocha-tinged finish. A wine of purity and quiet radiance, built for aging but already captivating in its youth.

A very elegant wine from the Dominus team that contrasts with most wines from this generally opulent vintage. Opens with red fruit, raspberries and cherries, laced with mineral and savory notes before darker fruit, tobacco, blackcurrant and rich earth flavors fill the palate. Very silky tannins, a medium body and a sense of refreshment with good acidity. Composed of cabernet sauvignon with touches of cabernet franc and petit verdot. A super well-balanced wine that’s tempting to drink now, but best from 2029.

This 2019 Ulysses Cabernet is bright, starting with red-fruited aromatics, rich brown baking spice notes, a hint of agave, and then revealing notes of candied blue fruits and dusty minerals. Full-bodied and richly layered, with more succulent black-toned fruit, the palate packs emerging tannins with a black tea-like quality that builds in its grip and intensity. The wine is lengthy and spicy, with a structural grip and a hint of mocha on the finish. A small portion of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc are blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon from Christian Moueix's terrific Oakville site.

A rich, slow-moving style, with waves of cassis, plum reduction and Black Forest cake laced with licorice root and espresso crema along the way. The finish delivers heavy glossy toast notes, which should be soaked up in due time. This should unwind nicely with cellaring. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,200 cases made.

Heavy rains in winter and spring totalled 51 inches (cf the 31 inches average). Temperatures see-sawed until June when the first of many heatwaves occurred. Picked 26 September to 11 October. 1,200 cases produced and released only in March 2023.
Light to mid crimson. Less extraction? Still very youthful with only a suggestion of tea leaves on the nose but very winning smooth texture on the palate. Still quite a bit of tannin on the palate. Put this away! Pretty juicy fruit though under the tannin. This may be quite a star eventually.

Our team’s intention is to produce a wine reflecting the exceptional potential and individuality of the Ulysses Vineyard. Our approach is minimalist, with attentive observation and restrained intervention. Harvested at perfect ripeness and with the utmost care, the grapes undergo both cluster and berry selection before a gentle vinification and aging.

Ulysses is a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It should be decanted prior to serving.
Our first vintage, Ulysses 2012, is a finely sculpted wine with elegance and lift.
