Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone DOCG 2020 is one of Tuscany's most celebrated expressions of Sangiovese, crafted from the renowned Asinone vineyard in Montepulciano. Produced only in the best vintages, this flagship wine represents the pinnacle of Poliziano's winemaking tradition and terroir. The 2020 vintage reveals aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, sweet spices, and subtle mineral notes. Rich and structured on the palate, it delivers vibrant dark fruit flavours, refined tannins, and remarkable freshness, leading to a long and elegant finish. A powerful yet balanced wine with excellent ageing potential, Asinone 2020 showcases the depth, complexity, and sophistication that have made it one of Italy's benchmark Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines.

A tense and mineral expression here with fine spices and pure red berries. This is transparent and understated on the palate with crumbled fine tannins that linger with the minerals and berries in a long, intense finish. Drink now.

    Wine Spectator | WS 94
    Published: Nov 30, 2023

A burly, linear red, with ample blackberry, black cherry and black currant fruit to offset the dense tannins. Vibrant, energetic and balanced, with a long, saturated aftertaste echoing the dark fruit and adding a hint of tobacco. Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo. Best from 2025 through 2043. 1,666 cases made, 250 cases imported.

    Vivino | Vivino 4.2

Intensity of the color gives way to fruity with notes of blackberries and sweet spicy notes. The palate is rich and robust, with important tannins but not intrusive.

After years of continual experimentation, we identified the best potential for quality in the vineyards of "Asinone".The Nobile "Asinone" is the highest expression of our production and the most complete synthesis of tradition and oenological innovation. Produced from Sangiovese grapes, this wine has an unmistakable style and distinct character, but it is, nevertheless, capable of holding its own in relation to international tastes.

CLASSIFICATION: DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION: 1983 (begun as a Reserve)
AVERAGE BOTTLE PRODUCTION: Asinone is only produced in the best years, and the number of bottles depends on the quality of the vintage. Average production is about 20,000 - 40,000 bottles. The years in which it is not bottled, Asinone is "downgraded" to basic Nobile di Montepluciano.
VARIETY: In the best years, Asinone is produced from 100% Sangiovese, otherwise we add about 10% Colorino and Merlot from the newer vineyards.
AREA OF VINEYARDS: 14 hectares (9 hectares planted in 1963 and 5 hectares planted in 1991)
    ALTITUDE: 350 m.s.l.m.
    EXPOSURE: South/Southwest
SOIL TYPE: Soft clay, slightly skeletal
PLANT DENSITY: 3,000 per hectare in the old part, 5,000 in the new.
    HARVEST METHOD: Manual in crates
VINIFICATION: Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature, with milling that includes repassing the must over the grape dregs. Fermentation and maceration take 20 - 25 days.
REFINEMENT: 16 - 18 months in "barriques" of French oak.
    AGEING POTENTIAL: 15 years
