Poggio Alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia 2017 750ml

A poised and elegant white from the famed Tuscan estate, Poggio alle Gazze 2017 blends Mediterranean freshness with depth and refinement. Early harvesting preserved vibrant acidity and lifted aromas of citrus, white flowers, and boxwood. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet sleek, with stone fruit, apricot pie, and steely minerality leading to a long, persistent finish. A Sauvignon Blanc–driven blend shaped by a dry, sun-soaked vintage, it captures both delicacy and determination.

I love the nose here of honeysuckle, dried jasmine, daffodils, apricot pie and peach flan with some butterscotch undertones. Full-bodied and intense, but very precise in its delivery of sleek stone fruit and steely acidity. Drink now.

The 2017 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia takes a back seat compared to the more exuberant, intense and complex vintage to come immediately before this. I tasted the 2016 and 2017 releases side by side. This wine offers a lower aromatic threshold with dried flower and summer grass. Generally speaking, the wine offers less fruit and more dryness that directly reflects the dusty heat of the 2017 summer season. You can almost taste that dry summer heat in this Sauvignon Blanc-driven blend of white grapes. The wine's mouthfeel texture is also considerably slimmed down.

Gazing towards the Mediterranean and deeply rooted in the identity of Ornellaia, Poggio alle Gazze reveals a refreshing spirit that is delicate like the breeze, while also remaining sumptuous and self-assured.

“In 2017, the early harvesting of white grapes enhanced their acidity and aromas, crafting a Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia of great freshness and depth. Citrus, white floral and boxwood nuances followed by superb balance between freshness and persistence, plus a long finish.”
