Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay 2019 750ml

The 2019 Yattarna Chardonnay is a refined expression of ultra-fine Australian Chardonnay, blending grapes from cool-climate regions Tasmania, Tumbarumba, and Adelaide Hills. It reveals a strikingly flinty, struck-match nose with bright citrus, white peach, and delicate floral notes. The palate is complex and textural, showcasing toasty, nutty oak nuances alongside vibrant white nectarine and green tea, finishing long and elegant. A modern style marked by precision and finesse, it promises excellent aging potential from 2024 to 2040.

The 2019 Yattarna Chardonnay is flinty and reductive, with a toasty sulfide-riddled palate. There are notes of marmalade on cold toast, white flowers, green tea/matcha, white peach, pineapple lumps and clotted cream. The struck-match quality of the palate is beguiling to some (to me), and this carries through to the long finish. What a pleasure.

The introduction of a flinty spark to the nose shows that Yattarna has moved again in style, now standing proudly like a more rarefied, polished version of the impressive Reserve Bin A model. It allows the pristine fruit to speak in nuanced tones, its airy dance of lemon, mandarin and grapefruit notes swooping into a darker, sterner mid-palate, where delicate oak frames pristine white nectarine and adds just enough savoury bite.

Instantly makes an impression of fruit intensity with yellow citrus and peaches. There’s a deep sense of complexity through barrel fermentation, adding pastry and nutty oak-spice aromas. The palate is deeply concentrated and grips the finish tight. A blend of Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

From Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills. What a mix of provenances!
Struck-match nose! Lean and racy. I like this style (which is very different from earlier vintages) but not everyone will. Like a mouthful from a mountain stream. Long.

Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Yattarna is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focused and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind across generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the ambition to create a white wine that would set the standard for ultra-fine Australian Chardonnay. In all, there were 144 trial wines made before Yattarna was eventually launched. The allotment of “Bin 144” acknowledges this pioneering winemaking. By selectively sourcing only the finest Chardonnay grapes from cool-climate regions, Yattarna reflects Penfolds continued commitment to our original goal, to forge a white wine of exceptional quality. The very name “Yattarna” being drawn from an indigenous language, meaning ‘little by little, gradually’. Each new vintage invites the opportunity to further expand the boundaries of winemaking innovation, grape sourcing and our understanding of this noble varietal.
