Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2021 750ml
Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2021 is a powerful yet beautifully balanced expression of one of Italy's most celebrated red wine styles. Made from the traditional Valpolicella blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, the grapes undergo the classic appassimento process, drying naturally on bamboo racks to concentrate flavour and aromas. The result is a richly textured Amarone layered with baked cherries, plums, dark chocolate, coffee and spice, supported by refined tannins and vibrant acidity.

A restrained wine with smoke, graphite, tobacco, dark fruit and forest floor, as well as Sicilian chocolate. Graceful on the attack, showing crisp acidity and refined tannins. Gentle extraction compared to previous vintages, with a muscular yet focused finish. Drinkable now but best from 2031.

One of Amarone's most recognisable labels, Costasera is reliably delicious and fantastic value. This is ripe, fresh and succulent, with plenty of balsam-infused dark berries and a floral touch. Plush but nicely poised, it keeps its shirt tucked in and doesn't get out of shape at all. A great place to start your Amarone adventure.

Full bottle 1,400 g. 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara. Friable red limestone and marl soils on west- and south-west-facing slopes. Hand-harvested and dried on bamboo racks in specialised lofts. By late January, the grapes had lost 35% of their weight. Only the Corvina grapes were naturally attacked by noble rot. Partially destemmed, then fermented for 45 days at low temperatures in large Slavonian oak barrels and stainless steel. The wine was then transferred to 30- to 40-hl barrels for a further 35 days of alcoholic fermentation using alcohol-resistant yeasts. Winemaker Andrea dal Cin. Natural-cork closure. TA 5.9 g/l, pH 3.53, RS 6.5 g/l. Vegan. Available in up to 200 shops.
Does what it says on the tin (DWISOTT). Powerful, glossy and weighty, with a touch more heft (and less finesse) than hoped for. Spices on the finish, but the sweetness is just a little obvious and seems out of balance. Plenty of content but there are more appealing Amarone’s out there at this price level. Andy Howard MW

Deep ruby red. Stewed fruit, plum and cherry to the nose. Fruity aromas with notes of coffee and cocoa. Extremely balanced.
