Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2020 1500ml

The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay from Margaret River is a stunning, tightly constructed wine that perfectly balances elegance and power. It shows complex aromas of white peach, pear, citrus verbena, and subtle spices, all wrapped in a delicate, mineral-driven frame. On the palate, it’s fresh and vibrant with layers of nectarine, lemon, and flint, finishing long with a crisp, saline edge. Rich yet precise, this full-bodied Chardonnay is already showing beautifully but has the structure to age gracefully for years to come.

Tauter than vintages of yore, boasting complex aromas of pear distillate, citrus verbena, nougat, cashew, cedar-tinged oak and succulent white peach. Immaculately constructed, pure and rather wonderful. Founded on a tensile stream of pungent mineral, transcendental poise and scintillating length. There is little out of place here. Superb New World chardonnay. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2020 vintage was one of generosity, and this wine is inviting and approachable, with plentiful white florals and delicate spices. Speaks with softness and a rounded frame of opulence. White peach skin and a multitude of finely textured, petal-like layers provide cushioning and comfort to the power and tension that are consistent features of Art Series Chardonnay. The wide palate is immensely detailed and complex, the pretty florals and white pear perfume hard to resist. A fine Chardonnay, and one that is drinking gracefully and with abundance in the early years of release.

The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay favorably reflects the positive aspects of the 2020 growing season, which was warm and dry, and at that time, it was the earliest harvest start time that Margaret River had experienced. That statistic has since been overtaken by ensuing vintages—2024 is a stark example. This wine is tightly coiled and colored white in its characters: nectarine, white peach, white currant, white pepper and pineapple husk. I recall soon after its release in 2022, I tasted this wine blind at one of my wine group nights, and at that tightly bound stage, I couldn't see Margaret River nor the seasonal warmth in the glass. It has since fleshed out somewhat and now is looking more like its place and year. The acidity is juicy and almost puckering in its intensity, and it lingers long after the wine has gone. Sealed under screw cap.

Elevated, fragrant and perfumed, the nose is defined by chamomile, lemon myrtle, cherry blossom and ginger. A core and concentrated fruit spectrum of pear, lemon flesh and white nectarine provide the foundation. There is a graphite, flint, and chalk thread, combining with nutmeg and almond meal.
Energetic and well poised, an array of fresh lime and nashi pear is laced throughout. The palate is ethereal, mineral and defined with a presence of natural acidity. There is an enticing element of saline, wet stone and phyllitic characteristic that weaves within. The shape and frame on the palate is present and focussed with effortless length.
