Château Pichon Baron 2025 is a remarkable expression of Pauillac, showcasing the estate’s signature power, precision, and Cabernet Sauvignon-driven elegance. Composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, this exceptional vintage reveals layers of cassis, dark berries, graphite, spice, and subtle licorice, supported by refined tannins and remarkable freshness. Sourced from the historic Günzian gravel terraces opposite Château Latour, the Grand Vin reflects Pichon Baron’s uncompromising focus on low yields and meticulous selection. The warm 2025 growing season produced a wine of impressive concentration and depth while maintaining balance, tension, and purity of fruit.

A brilliant achievement, the 2025 Pichon-Longueville Baron, a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot (70% new oak), features a notably high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon for a warm vintage, exceeding that of 2020 and 2022. It reveals a refined bouquet of dark wild berries, cassis, spice, lead pencil and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it’s built around a fleshy, finely structured core of fruit with a distinctly Cabernet-driven profile, combining freshness and tension with notable depth. It should age gracefully over the next two to three decades.
At Château Pichon Baron, the modern trajectory turns on a simple decision: reduce. Until 2000, the estate produced some 350,000 bottles per year; from 2001, that figure fell to 160,000. Christian Seely, on arrival, narrowed the focus to the grand vin, privileging Cabernet Sauvignon rooted in the deep gravel terraces opposite Château Latour. These soils, long the historic core, delivered the celebrated 1989 and 1990, before further parcels joined through acquisitions in the early 1990s. The shift does not expand the vineyard’s voice; it clarifies it. Less volume, stricter selection, more definition.
Viticulture centers on these Günzian gravels, with harvest dates calibrated to phenolic maturity—2025 again follows the cadence of 2022. In the cellar, the methods remain restrained: one to two délestages, limited remontage and a total cuvaison of 18 to 21 days, counted from cold maceration through to décuvage. The construction of a new barrel cellar in 2006 has allowed for tighter temperature control, bringing greater precision to the élevage. Extraction and élevage choices aim for structure without excess, reinforcing the estate’s measured evolution.
Stylistically, Pichon Baron now aligns more closely with the depth and architecture of Latour than with the perfumed sensuality of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The wines show concentration, a firm tannic spine and a controlled expression of fruit. The 2025 vintage reflects a precocious, warm and dry season that yielded color and density yet with a sequence of overcast weeks in July and August that preserved freshness and moderated alcohol compared to 2018. Beneficial rains in early September supported the Cabernet Sauvignon, helping it complete ripening without dilution. Notably, low yields led the estate to forgo production at Château Pibran: its Merlot was directed into Les Tourelles, while its Cabernet found its way into Les Griffons, reinforcing the depth and internal balance of these cuvées.

A very structured red with intense tannins, finishing polished and refined. It's medium-to-full-bodied with super creamy tannins and a long finish. Granular tannins.

Classic in weight and style. Intense and floral on the nose, on the palate dark fruit and graphite. Tannins abundant but polished, the texture fine. Plenty of freshness. Powerful but refined. (JL)
