Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe 2001 is a refined and age-worthy Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most iconic estates. Awarded 93+ points by The Wine Advocate, this elegant vintage reveals aromas of blackberry, cassis, cedar, graphite, tar, and subtle tobacco. A classic blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it offers a medium-bodied palate with fine acidity, mineral tension, polished tannins, and a complex, harmonious finish. A beautifully evolved Montrose with excellent drinking potential through 2040.

Tasted at the château, the 2001 Montrose is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 24 September and 9 October. It has quite a tightly wound bouquet that either needs a hefty decant or preferably, another 5-6 years in bottle. The scents that can be coaxed are attractive: blackberry, a touch of tar and pencil box, later Indian ink and cedar wood. The palate is medium-bodied with gently gripping tannin, a fine line of acidity and impressive harmony. This gains complexity towards the finish. Tensile, minerally and edgy, this is becoming a highly pleasurable Montrose that will surprise a few people. Sure, it does lack some persistence, however, keep an eye on this. Tasted September 2016.

Modest in display, with lightly mulled currant and blackberry fruit infused with bay leaf and tobacco accents. This is sneakily long, offering a very refined chalk- and iron-fueled finish and lovely integration throughout. Mid crimson. Rather monolithic on the nose. Very dry and dense. Solidissimo! Chewy. Very like the Montrose old-fashioned stereotype. You would really need to know and love Montrose to love this rather surly wine. Jancis Robinson

It has a fine and elegant robe with a beautifully intense and dark garnet. The nose, powerful and harmonious, is pleasantly woody. Aerated, it reveals lightly toasted aromas, followed with hints of ripe fruits and liquorice. The palate is full and soft with tight tannins and a light sweetness. The finish is long and harmonious.
