Château Montrose St-Estèphe 1993 750ml is a mature Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) Bordeaux from one of the most respected estates in the St-Estèphe appellation. Produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this classic Left Bank wine showcases the elegance and complexity that only decades of careful cellaring can achieve. The 1993 vintage has evolved beautifully, offering layered aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor and cigar box, complemented by refined tannins, savoury spice and a long, harmonious finish. Renowned for its exceptional ageing potential and powerful structure, Château Montrose remains one of Bordeaux's benchmark wines, making this mature vintage an excellent choice for collectors, special occasions and enthusiasts seeking a rare and authentic expression of aged Bordeaux.

Fabulous for a '93. Montrose continues to make excellent wines regardless of the vintage. Rich and elegant tobacco, cherry, smoke, toasted oak character, medium to full body, fine tannins and long, flavorful finish. Better in 1998. 21,250 cases made.

Tasted at the château, the 1993 Montrose is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot picked between 20 September and 5 October. It has an interesting and quite complex bouquet that is clearly a step up from the previous vintage. It has plenty of bell pepper aromas that lend it an almost Loire-like personality. It feels fresh and well defined, perhaps a little metallic at first, although appears to ebb away. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly rustic tannin. This is a masculine and ferrous Montrose, still "grumpy" as I once described it. However, this bottle showed more freshness than I was expecting and I quite enjoyed its grainy texture. Drink without too high hopes and you might like this. Tasted September 2016.

The winter of 1993 was mild but very wet, with rainfall that replenished the water table. Budbreak was early, with excellent bud break on the Merlot and very good bud break on the other grape varieties. The end of May and the first days of June were hot and dry, which promoted rapid and even flowering with very little coulure (poor fruit set) on the Merlot. The mid-flowering date was recorded as June 5th. In mid-June, successive storms and heavy rainfall accelerated the development of diseases, primarily downy mildew and botrytis, requiring increased vigilance regarding phytosanitary treatments. In mid-July, we carried out green harvesting on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. Mid-veraison occurred around August 5th: a very rapid and even veraison, favored by a hot, dry, and sunny August. However, despite historically high rainfall during the harvest, surprisingly healthy and ripe grapes were able to be picked.
The quality of the Merlots is remarkable, with deeply colored, velvety, and rich wines, leaving an impression of great roundness. The Cabernets are very classic: a beautiful tannic structure with ripe tannins that are not aggressive and are well supported by excellent balance on the palate.

    Harvest dates:
    September 20 – October 5

    Assembly
    Cabernet Sauvignon: 71%
    Merlot: 29%

Tasting notes: Dense color, very slightly evolved, with faint brick-red highlights.
Nose: leather, cocoa, truffle, mirabelle plum, beeswax.
Complex palate: red fruits, leather, black fruit liqueur.
A very good wine with richness. A refined and elegant wine. Slightly evolved.
Clean and direct attack. A slightly light mid-palate. A lovely, well-integrated finish underpinned by a touch of acidity.
