Château Léoville Las Cases 2006 is a structured and intensely classic Saint-Julien, revealing aromas of cassis, dark berries and red currant, layered with notes of espresso, spice, cedar, graphite and toasted oak. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate is deep, tight and brooding, with firm, powdery tannins and a finely layered structure. While still showing a restrained and somewhat austere character, it delivers precision, complexity and remarkable depth, leading to a long, evolving finish with significant aging potential.

The 2006 Léoville Las Cases is muscular and uncompromising, unwinding to reveal aromas of dark berries, cassis, burning embers, espresso roast, exotic spices, loamy soil and toasty oak. Full-bodied, rich and extracted, it's a deep, brooding wine with considerable depth and concentration, framed by an abundance of sweet, powdery tannin. It possesses considerable potential, but it continues to require patience.

Aromas of blackberries, black olives, raspberries, iodine and asphalt follow through to a medium to full body with a tight, layered palate and a juicy finish. Hints of iodine at the end. Some licorice, too. Drink now.

Tasted blind in a flight that included Lafite and Mouton, the 2006 Leoville-Las Cases showed exceptionally well. The trademark restraint of Las Cases was in full display, with elegant aromas of red currant, pomegranate and blackberry and hints of gunflint, cedar, and clove. The texture is silky and very fine rather than powerful. This wine is beginning to open up now, but it will definitely improve with more time in the cellar. A wait of five more years would be prudent, then drink over the next 30.
