Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou St-Julien 2000 750ml

The 2000 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, is a stunning wine with complex aromas of baked black currants, raisin cake, prunes, Chinese five spice, and eucalyptus, alongside touches of cigar box, leather, and cast iron pan. The medium-bodied palate is refreshingly lively, with layers of spice and dried berries, complemented by soft, powdery tannins. Its long, mineral-laced finish adds to its elegance. Now entering its prime drinking window, this wine has an exceptional ability to age well into the 2040s.

Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-brick colored 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou charges out of the gate with flamboyant scents of baked black currants, raisin cake, prunes, Chinese five spice and eucalyptus plus touches of cigar box, new leather and cast iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate is remarkably refreshing with all these decadent spice and dried berries layers coating the palate, textured by soft, powdery tannins, finishing long and mineral laced. I must admit that I was a little unimpressed with the Ducru 2000 in the beginning when I tasted it after bottling in 2003. But it'sclearly outstanding now and seems to get better and better with age. It shows wonderful aromas of roses and currants with hints of mint. it'sfull body yet very finely textured with pretty fruit concentration and length.

Moccha, pine and mushroom notes emphasise the development almost 25 years since the vintage. There is still masses of sweet, dark currant fruit on the palatae with plenty of acidity to keep the wine fresh and alive. Concentrated and long, this is a fine wine which is now well into its drinking phase. Perhaps the tannins give the age away a little, with a leafy, slightly drying finish, suggesting that the wine is not going to improve substantially, but will hold well.

Deep blackish ruby. Pale rim. Gentle, evolved nose reminiscent of dunked digestive biscuits. Spicy top note. Mouth-filling and lovely to drink now. Long and flattering. Gentle. Not the attack of the wines of the Bruno Borie era. Tiny hint of brett?

For 300 years, six families have nurtured an indelible bond with Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. They are forever captives of this prestigious estate, be they named Desjean, Bergeron, Ducru, Johnston, Desbarat, or Borie. Its families were never short of praise for it. Over the decades, this devotion has managed to overcome all that is accidental or fleeting, as if passion perfected Nature's opus.
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to its "beautiful pebbles" ("beaux Cailloux", in French) that geologists refer to less romantically as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne at the beginning of the early Quaternary period, some two million years ago. It suffices to take a walk through the vineyards to make rich lithological finds. Lydian jasper from the Pyrenees, flint, quartz, agatoids... These Gunzian gravels make for soils that are poor in plant nutrients. But it is their very agrological paucity that guarantees the qualitative excellence of the wines. A choice of nature.
The result is in the glass. The allure is immediate. A soft, fruity attack on the palate, a voluptuousness underscored by perfectly integrated, silky tannins that culminate in an exceptionally lengthy finish. The aromas dance, flatter the nose, seduce the soul and penetrate the memory. A muse that arrives on tiptoe and leave a lasting, infinite souvenir.
