Château Cheval Blanc Saint-Émilion 2014 is a beautifully refined vintage from one of Bordeaux’s most legendary estates. Awarded 96 points by Decanter and 95 points by The Wine Advocate, it combines remarkable fragrance and elegance with impressive depth and structure. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, rose, dark chocolate, graphite, liquorice and cedar lead to a graceful, medium-bodied palate with fine freshness, firm yet polished tannins and a remarkably long finish. Still youthful, this is a sophisticated Saint-Émilion with the finesse and ageing potential expected of Cheval Blanc.

    Decanter | D 96
    Drink: 2024-2046

Intensely fragrant and aromatic, perfumed with dark chocolate, coffee, blackcurrant, graphite and liquorice with slight leather aspects. Round and nicely filling, not weighty at all, this is streamlined but feels finessed and graceful while still carrying some texture and density. Salty, strawberries and touches of wet stone, this feels quite young and just a touch compact right now. Not yet fully expanded, keeping its serious face on, but you know it has been well built and there's harmony there. A gem still waiting to shine.

Medium garnet colored, the 2014 Château Cheval Blanc is still looking very youthful and wearing a bit of puppy fat, sporting gregarious red and black cherries notes with hints of oolong tea, wilted roses and dusty soil. Medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the lively fruit, it finishes on a lingering perfumed note.

So much damson-plum and plum-cake richness, plus a substantial amount of fine tannin behind it, give this rich wine an impressively plush texture. Very long, supple finish that makes it hard not to reach for the glass once again. Drink or hold. Château Quintus vertical tasting. SP.

Tasted blind. Deeply colour with bricky rim. Cedary mature red fruits. Leafy, too. Lightish body but the balance is there in a leaner style. Elegant and long if not generous. Leafy aftertaste, finely textured. Elegant and long and I marked this up half a point when I went back to it at the end of the flight. Julia Harding MW

Since it won its first medal, still featured on its labels, at the Universal Exhibition of London in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines. Its grace, alchemy and elegance are the incarnation of refined French culture, of unparalleled quality.

Château Cheval Blanc has been situated in the commune of Saint-Emilion for 200 years. It covers 39.5 hectares divided into 55 plots, each of which is different and unique. Each plot has its own characteristics according to its age, size and, in particular, its soil and grape variety. Each plot is vinified separately so that it can express its individuality fully before blending and so that it can contribute to the overall coherence of each vintage.

Château Cheval Blanc has always been managed with longevity in mind: all the particularities of this legendary Bordeaux have been preserved throughout the years – its terroir, grape varieties and style – whilst its qualities continue to become more refined and assertive.  Thanks to the mineral and vegetal heritage and increasingly rigorous know-how, Château Cheval Blanc has made a place for itself on the most prestigious tables across the globe for over a century and a half.

    - 2014 -

2014 was mainly a rainy year until the end of August. Nevertheless, thanks to exceptionally good autumn weather, it was possible to harvest each plot at peak ripeness and avoid any herbaceous aromas. Cabernet Franc grapes are very successful thanks to these hot and dry weather conditions.

    Tasting notes
Lovely, deep ruby-red colour. Rich and elegant bouquet with an impressive intensity, evolving into a cedar-wood bouquet. Black- and red-berry fruits, blend of blackberries, blackcurrants, cherries and raspberries. Heady, fruity and floral overtones, reminiscent of roses.
The initial impression on the palate is clean and powerful – even opulent. The mid-palate is bursting with fruit and has an unctuous texture, with a richness that perfectly envelops the density and tightness of the lovely, ripe tannins. The fresh and elegant aftertaste is remarkably long.
