Chateau Calon Segur St-Estephe 2000 750ml
SKU: RDFR20000121
Château Calon Ségur Saint-Estèphe 2000 is a superb mature Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe's most iconic Third Growth estates, celebrated for its remarkable elegance, structure, and longevity. Produced from a classic Left Bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, this outstanding millennium vintage has developed beautifully, revealing complex layers of blackcurrant, red berries, cedar, cigar box, tobacco, graphite, leather, and subtle earthy spice. The palate is refined yet powerful, with finely structured tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional length that continues to evolve with time. A benchmark expression of Saint-Estèphe, Château Calon Ségur 2000 is drinking magnificently today after decanting while still offering the potential to cellar for many more years. It is an outstanding match for roast lamb, prime rib, game, duck, and aged hard cheeses.

Tasted from an ex-Chateau bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estephe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Segur; it might just outclass the 2005. Tasted March 2015.

This is a solid, huge wine, with rich but very dry tannins. With its dense, almost black color, and its sense of brooding power, it promises long aging. It will never be in the opulent Bordeaux camp, despite its prominent new wood flavors, but will probably outlive all but a handful top wines. — Roger Voss

This shows a noticeable leafy edge, with tobacco, light cedar, bay and worn leather notes holding sway over a core of lightly mulled red currant and plum fruit flavors. Not as dense as the top examples, but everything pulls together nicely through the fine-grained finish. -- Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015). Drink now through 2020.

The Grand Vin of Calon Ségur mirrors its terroir. It is rare, authentic and stirs the soul. In the most natural way, it reveals both great delicacy and outstanding intensity. All the magic of Calon is in this balance. The wine is aged in new oak barrels for 20 months, the tannins of the oak integrating harmoniously over time with the tannins of the grapes. The style is brought by a Cabernet Sauvignon which expresses its finesse without arrogance. Elegance is to be found everywhere, in the purity of the wine’s flavours, in the delicacy of its texture, while its depth and length are also superb. The wine’s extraordinary ability to age many years in bottle is another feature of the estate. The 1947, 1953 and 1982 vintages, by way of example, still display astonishing signs of youth.
