Château Beychevelle Saint-Julien 2022 is a beautifully polished expression of this prestigious Fourth Growth Bordeaux estate, combining ripe fruit with freshness, precision and elegance. Awarded 95 points by both James Suckling and Decanter, this vintage opens with intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, liquorice and lead pencil. The medium- to full-bodied palate is juicy and focused, with creamy, velvety tannins, lively acidity and a long, flavourful finish marked by mineral and minty freshness. A blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a confident and refined Saint-Julien with excellent ageing potential through the 2040s.

Intense blackberries and blackcurrants with spice and lead-pencil aromas. Medium-bodied, it has creamy and polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. The cabernet sauvignon is singing here. 54% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot and 4% petit verdot. Give it three to five years of bottle age. Best after 2028.

Juicy and really appealing straight away on the palate, Fruit forward, this has energy and focus with emphasis on bright fruit and racy acidity. The overall frame is structured but not overwhelming in any way. I love the focus and this feels confident without shouting too much. On the ripe side in terms of concentration but the overall feeling, and lift on the end, is one of cool cola, blueberry and minty freshness. A lovely Beychevelle.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and cassis mingled with hints of violets and licorice, framed by creamy new oak, the 2022 Beychevelle is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by rich, unusually suave and polished tannins in the context of recent vintages at this address. It's a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, with a pH of 3.85, quite typical for this address.

Tasted blind. Shaded rim. A tad furry on the nose – too ripe? Not enough freshness. Blackberry fruit. Showed the heat. Jancis Robinson
