Château Angélus 2025 En Primeur 750ml is a refined and highly expressive Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” en primeur release, blending 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc. The wine shows exceptional purity and precision, with aromas of raspberry, cherry, blueberry, violets, and dark plum, layered with licorice, spices, and floral lift. Medium to full-bodied, it is built on finely integrated, silky tannins with vibrant acidity and remarkable length, delivering a seamless, linear structure that reflects both power and elegance. This vintage highlights a modern, more restrained style at Angélus, with greater focus on purity, finesse, and terroir expression, supported by careful parcel selection and gentler élevage. A benchmark release with outstanding ageing potential through 2050.

The pureness of fruit is exceptional, with a long and linear palate of wonderfully curated raspberry, cherry and blueberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied. You almost don’t see the tannins, but you know they are there. So silky and endless. It has the core of fruit of the best of the vintage. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc.

A blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2025 Angélus is already beautifully harmonious, even at this early stage. Unfurling in the glass with notes of sweet dark berries and plums mingled with notions of violets, licorice and spices, it's medium- to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with ripe tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. Much like its 2022 predecessor, the 2025 underlines that this estate's shift toward greater purity and subtler élevage choices can be sustained even in historically warm years.

Since taking the helm at Angélus, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and her team have been boldly evolving toward less impactful winemaking. What does that mean in practice? Cooler macerations, élevage that now incorporates foudres for the grand vin and tanks for Tempo, No. 3 and Carillon, reducing the impact of new barriques without the loss in precision that often comes from repeatedly reused barrels—along with, I'm sure, a host of other smaller changes that cumulatively mean that Angélus today is a very different beast from the rich, toasty wine of the 1990s and early 2000s. The 2025 vintage, cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare, is one of the most accomplished wines produced to date in the estate's new era. Harvest took place between September 10–20, with different approaches to different parcels and varieties, Merlot seeing as much as two weeks' pre-fermentation macerations and Cabernet Franc a mere four or five days.

A great wine from Angélus this year. Blackcurrant and blue fruit aromas with some dried flowers and soft herbal aspects. Round and generous, wide and filling with amazing definition and creamy texture that few wines have this year. Energy and depth, purity and focus – this is juicy at its core with strawberry and red cherry, mouthwatering. Not an immediate showstopper but this grows in flavour and depth with intensity but no heaviness. Beautiful delineation with a sharp, precise, forward persistence. The energy and balance is flawless. Really an elegant, elongated wine with such nuance of flavour. I love this and think they've done a super job – juicy, this brings a smile to your face. The last vintage with this high a proportion of Cabernet Franc (reflecting plantings and similar berry size was 2014 and 1995). 3.6pH. A yield of 30hl/ha. 50% Cabernet Franc ageing in foudres, 50% in new barrels; Merlot 70% new oak and 30% in one-year-old barrels.

    50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc. 30 hl/ha. Cask sample.
Deep purple colour. Nose bright, lifted and fragrant. Concentrated but finely honed, the tannins powerful but refined. Good tension. Structured with plenty of vigour but all well contained. (JL)

In the last thirty years, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest has constantly challenged practices and techniques for the benefit of his land and the unique characteristics of the wines grown on it, enabling Château Angelus to be recognised as one of the foremost properties in its appellation area. This recognition has been documented in one classification after another, the last of which awarded Château Angelus the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé "A".
