Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 750ml

This 100% Howell Mountain Cab is bold, vibrant, and full of character. Packed with cassis, black cherry, earthy minerality, and a savory edge, it’s rich yet precise, with fine tannins and serious length. A high-elevation stunner built to age—decant now or cellar with confidence.

A classic mountain cabernet sauvignon with blackcurrants, crushed berries, and black earth. Full-bodied. Tannins that are completely integrated. Pine needle. Very typical cabernet character. Long finish. Drink or hold.

Outpost's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal, sourced from around the winery, plus some barrels from the True Vineyard that didn't make the cut for inclusion there. Just don't call it a second wine, as it's a beautiful effort in its own right, with wonderfully pure cassis fruit, accented with notions of vanilla and hints of dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, dusty, tannic (but ripe) finish, try it in four or five years and drink it over the following two decades.
Owned since 2018 by AXA/Millesimes, Outpost continues to source grapes for these wines from Howell Mountain, although the company has added more vineyards—nearby Henry Ranch (undergoing redevelopment) and the Platt Vineyard in Sonoma. Thomas Rivers Brown remains the winemaker, and he poured these for me during our tasting session at Mending Wall. A tiny quantity of the wines makes it into distribution, but the best way to ensure getting some is via the mailing list, as most of these are already sold out. With no 2020 red wines having been bottled, look for the 2021s next year.

Spicy ripe nose. Dry finish. Lively and energetic. Muscular and long with a peppery note. Very savoury.

Our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the very best vineyard blocks located between 1,800 and 2,200 feet in elevation. Grapes from each block within the vineyard are fermented separately so that our winemaking team can be very selective about the lots that comprise the final blend. Wines are neither fined or filtered allowing for the full expression of the vintages' potential.

Tasting Notes
"Sporting a deep purple-black color, the 2019 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little coaxing to begin, soon unfurling to reveal notions of crushed black cherries, wild blueberries and fresh blackcurrant, plus suggestions of tar, wet slate, fertile loam and black truffles .The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with wonderful energy, delivering loads of black fruit layers and a firm, grainy frame plus a lively backbone, finishing long and mineral laced." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Highest Barrel Score, 96 Points
