Tempranillo is Spain’s most celebrated red grape, best known as the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It produces medium- to full-bodied wines with flavours of red and black cherry, plum, blackberry and dried herbs, often developing notes of leather, tobacco, vanilla and spice with oak ageing. Naturally balanced by moderate acidity and firm tannins, Tempranillo can produce both approachable young wines and complex, long-lived expressions.
