This new decanter released for 2016 takes its name from the world's most exclusive and coveted breed of hen, indigenous to Indonesia. The elegant and impressive appearance of the Ayam hen inspired Maximilian J. Riedel, 11th generation CEO & president of Riedel Crystal, to create this groundbreaking and functional design. Committed to continuing his family's long and successful entrepreneurial tradition, he was keen to create something exceptional and entirely new to mark the family-owned company's 260th anniversary. With the Ayam decanter he has impressively risen to this challenge.

This impressive decanter marries functionality with exceptional aesthetic appeal. The Ayam is a decanter with a duel decanter function, meaning the wine is aerated both when it is poured into and from the decanter, significantly reducing the time needed to "open up" the wine. The gurgling sound produced when wine poured into and from the decanter illustrates the intensity of the oxygenation process. The shape of the decanter is space saving and makes it easy to handle.

However, the real innovation lies in the design of the Ayam, which was created not only to stand on the table, but also to hang from it! Thanks to the Ayam's precise balance, achieved meticulously by hand. Once again Riedel has lived up to its reputation as a trailblazer.

Inspired by the Ayam: The Ayam takes its name and inspiration from the rare Indonesian Ayam hen. Designed by Maximilian J. Riedel, it was created to mark Riedel’s 260th anniversary and represents a particularly unconventional chapter in the company’s handmade decanter collection.
Dual Decanting Function: The distinctive shape allows wine to be aerated both when it is poured into and out of the decanter, increasing oxygen exposure and helping younger wines open more rapidly. The characteristic gurgling sound during pouring is part of the design.
Black Stripe Detail: The black stripe gives the sculptural crystal body a dramatic contemporary appearance while emphasising the flowing, bird-inspired form.
Space-Saving Design: Despite its generous 1.7-litre capacity, the upright design occupies relatively little table space and is carefully balanced so that it can also be displayed hanging from the table edge.
Handmade Craftsmanship: The Ayam is hand-crafted and mouth-blown at Riedel’s glassworks in Kufstein, Austria. Individual variations are therefore part of its handmade character.
