Luce Della Vite 2016 750ml

A landmark Super Tuscan that marries Merlot’s plush richness with Sangiovese’s elegance and lift. The 2016 vintage shines with aromas of dark cherries, cassis, chocolate, tobacco, and a touch of porcini. Full-bodied yet refined, it balances polished tannins, fresh acidity, and lingering mineral notes for a powerful but graceful finish. Crafted in Montalcino by the Frescobaldi family, Luce is a modern icon of Tuscany.

A ripe but suggestive nose of dark cherries, dark chocolate, hot stones, cassis, brambleberry pie and bark. Yet, on the palate, this paints an altogether different picture, in which sleek tannins carry fresh layers of forest fruit long, through a compact, full-bodied palate. Powerful acidity steers it through to a restrained but chewy finish. Drink from 2024.

Developing attractively, the 2016 Luce offers fragrances of clove, tobacco and porcini atop baked cherries. It manages to fuse Merlot’s plushness with Sangiovese’s lightness of being in equal measure and is seamlessly assembled, yet not without intriguing tension. The tannins are polished, and irony minerals linger on the finish. A great year in Montalcino. Warm summer temperatures were kept in check and there was sufficient rain in August to prevent hydric stress.

Deep, lustrous ruby. Taut nose with rich cherry fruit underneath and a complex oak note. Full, yet sleek on the palate with lots of grainy tannins kept beautifully in check by the generous succulent cherry fruit. Ends full, concentrated and a little vibrant. The enormous alcohol of this wine simply goes unnoticed, until you look at the label.

Luce was the first wine from Montalcino made by blending Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. It was thanks to the collaboration of the Marchesi del Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi Families that came the idea of matching the roundness and softness of Merlot with the elegance and structure of Sangiovese in the land of Brunello di Montalcino, the worldwide famous Italian wine made strictly from Sangiovese grapes.
Since 2002, Lamberto Frescobaldi is completely responsible for this project. In the land of Brunello di Montalcino he continues to write the history of Luce, a Super Tuscan wine appreciated all around the world. In his work, he continues to unite the tradition of Sangiovese, a typical local grape variety, with the innovation of Merlot, first introduced in Montalcino in the Seventies.
