Sourced from cool-climate vineyards across Tumbarumba, Tasmania and Adelaide Hills, the 2022 vintage combines concentrated citrus and white-fruit flavours with flinty minerality, subtle French oak and finely balanced acidity. Its remarkable precision, texture and length make it both compelling now and an excellent candidate for extended cellaring.

The Wine Advocate | RP 97+
Published: Jul 18, 2024
Drink: 2024-2042

The 2022 Yattarna Chardonnay comprises fruit from Tumbarumba (61%), Tasmania (particularly Coal River Valley, 26%) and the balance from the Adelaide Hills. This wine ages slowly and gracefully, and I love it for that. The phenolics frame a powerful core of fruit that is at once streamlined and wide. It blankets the mouth and persists long after the wine is gone. At this stage, it feels inchoate in its development: tiny fish hooks of texture and a frisky sort of acid line both indicate that the wine has some time to go before it fully realizes its potential. This is forever the blue-chip investment in this collection for my taste, and there is a perpetually seamless cohesion of malolactic fermentation into the wine. The Yattarna is fully inoculated with estate-developed yeast strains, built in conjunction over time with the AWRI. It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.11 and 6.8 grams per liter of total acidity, and it matured for eight months in French barriques (44% new).

James Suckling | JS 97
Published: Jun 29, 2023

There is a cooler aura to this, perhaps, than the other chardonnays. Spruce, nettle and lemon curd to camembert on the nose, shifting gears to stone fruit references and a glimpse of praline, cashew, pistachio and nougat at the core. The aspiration and independence of mind across generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the ambition to create a white wine that would set the standard for ultra-fine Australian Chardonnay. In all, there were 144 trial wines made before Yattarna was eventually launched. The allotment of “Bin 144” acknowledges this pioneering winemaking. By selectively sourcing only the finest Chardonnay grapes from cool-climate regions, Yattarna reflects Penfolds continued commitment to our original goal, to forge a white wine of exceptional quality. The very name “Yattarna” being drawn from an indigenous language, meaning ‘little by little, gradually’. Each new vintage invites the opportunity to further expand the boundaries of winemaking innovation, grape sourcing and our understanding of this noble varietal.

Technical Specs

Alcohol: 12.5%
Closure: Screw Cap
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Vineyard Regions: Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills
Acidity: 6.8 g/L
pH: 3.11
Maturation: 8 months in French oak barriques, 44% new oak
Producer: Penfolds
Winemaker: Kym Schroeter
Region: South Australia, Australia
Country: Australia

Serving Temperature: 10–12°C
Decanting: No decanting required; allow the wine to open in the glass.
Food Pairing: Excellent with lobster, king prawns, roast chicken, grilled scallops, seafood risotto, roast pork and creamy mushroom dishes.
