Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle Rouge 1988 750ml

1988 Hermitage La Chapelle from Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a mature, structured Syrah showing its evolution with notes of cedar, forest floor, and exotic spice. Aromatically captivating and dense on the palate, it remains firm and powerful, reflecting the estate’s classic style and long aging potential.
Wine Spectator | WS 94
The hot summer with some rain in '88 made thick, full-bodied reds. This is no exception. Still young and closed, with tough and chewy tannins, with the terroir expressing a mineral, lead pencil and iron-tasting quality. Layered with Hermitage character. Connoisseurs will appreciate it now; others might cellar.--La Chapelle vertical.

Now, I really have a soft spot for this La Chapelle and it is drinking perfectly now. A very seductive nose instantly has you hooked with blackberry leaf, undergrowth, thyme, dried fruits and a touch of boot polish. Great definition and very natural. The palate just has a beautiful balance with vibrant, natural acidity and slightly grainy tannins. The finish is so refined with hints of white pepper and briary. Very good length – this is just a lovely Hermitage that dances beautifully on the palate. Drink now-2018. Tasted June 2008.
