Odfjell Orzada Carmenere 2018 750ml

This Carmenere kicks off with an unusual toasty note on the nose — not what you’d expect from a young one. But after some air, it opens up to reveal lovely forest berries and a surprising hint of grilled artichoke. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied with polished tannins that are dry but balanced, plus lively acidity that keeps it fresh.

At first, this is unusually toasty on the nose for a fresh young carmenere. But with aeration, the forest berries emerge nicely, followed by a hint of grilled artichoke. On the medium-full palate it has a very satisfying balance of rather polished, moderately dry tannins and lively acidity. Drink or hold.

This wine really speaks of Odfjell’s closeness to the Maule Valley, its people and its traditions. A premium Carmenère, produced with high-quality grapes from Cauquenes, harvested much earlier than most others. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks and cement spheres, without any use of oak, to achieve more broadness and fruit expression on the palate. A radical Carmenère, an ode to red fruits and herbs, that reflects the winery’s affinity with Maule.
