Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle Musigny 2018 750ml

A vibrant and elegant Pinot Noir crafted from young vines of Musigny, declassified to Premier Cru status. Deeply colored and aromatically complex, it reveals ripe raspberry, cherry, and hints of chalky minerality with subtle 25% new oak. The palate is smooth and plush, with fine tannins and a graceful, fresh finish. A poised, youthful Chambolle that will open beautifully with age.

François Millet makes this wine from four, young-vine parcels of Musigny, declassified to Premier Cru status. Youthful, vigorous and deeply colored, this is a chrysalis of a wine that finished its malolactic fermentation in July 2019 and is still relatively unformed. Smooth and plush on the palate with aromatic 25% new wood, some chalky minerality and some tannic grip.

This comes mostly from Les Porlottes with the addition of two small plots (0.15ha each) of 1ers crus Les Baudes and Les Fuées. Black centre with purple rim, a feeling of freshness. I expected black fruit to follow on the palate but it is more in a ripe raspberry and deep cherry, with the latter giving the feeling of freshness. It is exceptionally concentrated and the tannins will take a little longer in barrel to soften. Tasted Nov 2019.

Medium cherry-red; fades to salmon pink at the edge. The nose shows powdery, pure red fruit. The palate gives a very fresh expression; medium length but quite lacy and très elegant. The fine tannins give a little bite on the finish but this is a lovely, pure and elegant, rather than powerful, example of Chambolle.
