Connetable Talbot St-Julien 2017 750ml

Connétable Talbot 2017 is a refined second wine from the famed Château Talbot in Saint-Julien, offering a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot. Despite the challenges of frost in 2017, the wine showcases soft tannins and rich fruit, though it is slightly more subdued compared to recent vintages. With flavors of currant, chocolate, coffee bean, and cedar, it delivers a medium-bodied palate with a round, chewy texture and a long finish. Enjoyable now but will soften further with a few years of aging. Best between 2022 and 2030.

An outstanding second wine from Château Talbot. Medium-bodied palate with currant, chocolate, coffee-bean and cedar character. Round, chewy tannins and a rich, flavorful finish. Lovely length. Give it two or three years to soften. Better after 2021.

Talbot did not escape the frost in 2017, which affected almost all the vines that go into this second wine - the large majority of which were not used at all this year. They have clearly worked very hard to get the emphasis onto soft tannins and rich fruits, and this is unfussy and good quality but a little careful and underwhelming compared to recent vintages. Enjoy over the next four to 10 years.

One of the very first Médoc second wines. Connétable was created in the 1970s. Over the years, it has benefited from all the care given to the vineyard and increasingly stringent selections.
Like its predecessor, this is a classic, elegant wine, with a clean, well-defined structure and a long, fresh finish.
