Château Trotanoy 2024 is a bold and deeply expressive Pomerol crafted from nearly pure Merlot. With its signature power and complexity, it showcases dark fruit, spice, and firm structure, reflecting the estate’s exceptional clay-gravel terroir and old vines.

A fruit-forward red, showing blackberries, dark chocolate, walnuts and nutmeg with some coffee character. Medium- to full-bodied, this has round, juicy tannins and a savory finish. Builds at the end. A blend of 99.5% merlot and 0.5% cabernet franc.

Darkly spiced fruit on the nose, blackcurrant, black cherry and plum. Clean and focused, this has fine muscles and some tension - it carries an air of seduction, the flavours extending vertically creating layers of fleshy tannins, juicy acidity, ripe fruit and chalkiness. Filling, on the more forward and expressive side. I like the intensity here, it takes the vintage and adds extra push, density and confidence. Strong but clean, massy but also focussed. Complex with liquorice, clove, aniseed and black chocolate. Somehow this really works. Not a style that many have this year. Great wine! Ageing 50% new oak barrels for 16-18 months.

The 2024 Trotanoy is rich and muscular by the standards of the vintage, offering up aromas of minty blackberries, cherries and spices followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate with a dense core of fruit and plenty of structuring tannin that asserts itself on the youthfully chewy finish.
Winemaker
Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Ch?teau Trotanoy has been considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol since the end of the eighteenth century. The soil of Ch?teau Trotanoy is a very dense mixture of clay and gravel which tends to solidify as it dries out after rain to an almost concrete-like hardness, hence the name 'Trotanoy,' or, in other words, 'too wearisome' to cultivate.
The Trotanoy vineyard slopes gently to the west. The soil at the highest point of exposure contains a good proportion of gravel, becoming progressively more dominated by clay as the elevation declines. Under this clay is a subsoil of red gravel and an impermeable layer of hard, iron-rich soil known as ?crasse de fer.? This fascinating soil diversity brings power, depth and complexity to the wine. Trotanoy is vinified in small concrete vats, while aging takes place in oak barrels.
Trotanoy is a naturally profound, complex, richly-concentrated wine with outstanding aging potential. The wine possesses a deep color and a dense, powerful nose, repeated on the palate with the addition of creamy, dark chocolate notes, and a singular concentration of flavor owed to its very old vines.
