Chateau Pontet Canet Pauillac 1999 750ml

Château Pontet-Canet 1999 — A classic Pauillac showing mature black fruit, tobacco, and spice with silky tannins and refined balance. Medium-bodied with elegant minerality and smooth texture, this vintage is drinking beautifully now, offering purity and depth from Pontet-Canet’s biodynamic vineyards.

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 1999 Chateau Pontet-Canet put in a respectable showing and demonstrated more class than either the 1996 or 1982. Well-defined on the nose, there is a satisfying delivery of blackberry and blueberry fruit infused with dried blood and incense as it moves into its secondary stage. The palate is medium-bodied with classic tobacco-infused black fruit. There is nice salinity here, not a complex Pauillac by any stretch of the imagination, although there is impressive precision on the conservative finish. Probably at its peak now, the 1999 Pontet-Canet is a wine that never had lofty ambitions, but a wine that I would welcome on my table. Tasted February 2016.

Delivers complex aromas of Indian spices and blackberry. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very long and enjoyable. Really coming on now. -- '89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009).

Solid, a little sweet and certainly firm. Glossy texture but pretty solid and just a little chunky but a lot more life than most 1999s.

At the end of the day, the biodynamic approach has brought a new dimension to our wines. It has given them greater depth while producing more precise and silky tannins. The length of flavour on the palate has gained in minerality. Our wines are purer and more vibrant. Our feeling is that biodynamic farming has made us respect nature better. And the more we respect it, the more it will give us.
