Chateau Lascombes Margaux Grand Cru 2010 750ml

A bold and expressive Margaux from an exceptional vintage, the 2010 Château Lascombes offers layers of cassis, plum, cedar, and savory herbs wrapped in firm tannins and vibrant freshness. Generous in style yet built to age, it combines richness with structure, gradually revealing depth and complexity over time. A powerful interpretation of Margaux that will continue to reward patience.

Pinpoint but rich fruit in the form of blackcurrants, licorice, fresh herbs, blackberry leaf and cedar. Full body, structured tannins, vibrant acidity and a long finish. Wonderful combination of freshness and fruit. Delicious now but this will hold for many more years.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Lascombes gives up notes of dried herbs, tilled soil and black olives over a blackcurrant cordial and plums preserves core plus a touch of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers chewy tannins and bold freshness to support the savory flavors, finishing with an herbal lift.

Expressive nose of sweet cherries, cedar, vanilla and liquorice. Juicy and upfront at first, then becomes tight and severe as the promised fruity fun closes down. Tannins are nicely supportive, but the fruit doesn't have enough density or vibrancy to really sustain the palate, which becomes a little diluted. Dry, powdery liquorice and cola elements on the finish.

Dark and nicely toasty, with ample espresso and ganache up front, followed by steeped fig, blackberry and black currant fruit that rumbles through the finish. Features ample tarry grip, but eschews minerality and finesse for a direct and toast-driven approach. Best from 2014 through 2026. 25,000 cases made.

Magnum chosen for a family dinner on the basis it would be interesting to see how Lascombes under a previous regime was looking now that it has been taken in hand by the US Lawrence Family with ex-Ornellaia Axel Heinz in charge. In 2010 the property was being offered for sale by the US Colony Capital group who eventually sold it in 2011 to a French insurance company. So the 2010 was probably made with advice from Michel Rolland, Alain Raynaud and/or fellow consultant oenologist Yves Vatelot. I'm expecting the wine to be pretty full-on rather than expressing traditional Margaux elegance.
Deep, dark ruby. Classic mature Médoc nose actually! Even if with a slight undertow of overripe fruit. There's still a little bit of dry tannin on the slightly sudden (but not hot) end but there is lots of quite pleasurable fruit on the way there, even if it is far from the juiciest or most concentrated. High yields?

Depth, complexity and graceful power characterise this wine, which reveals all its qualities after long ageing in the bottle. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, it represents the Médoc’s winemaking tradition and embodies the great classicism of Margaux.
