Chateau Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan *ETA Q3, 2027 En-Primeur* 2024 750ml

A vintage of finesse and quiet power, the 2024 Haut-Brion delivers on the estate’s reputation for elegance and precision. With a higher-than-usual proportion of Cabernet Franc, this wine offers beautiful aromatics—think ripe berries, spices, and subtle florals—while the palate is structured and refined, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral finish. Despite a cool and challenging growing season, the estate’s warm Pessac terroir helped produce expressive fruit with great aging potential. A classic Haut-Brion in the making.

This year, the style of Haut Brion shows through with transparency, beautiful balance and precision. Fine austerity, with excellent minerality, dark olives and red and dark berries. Structured on the mid-palate. Beautiful depth for the vintage, with really fine-grained tannins and a lengthy finish that lingers. So much vibrancy and finesse. A classic vintage.

The 2024 Haut-Brion is more perfumed than La Mission Haut-Brion, unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark berries and spices mingled with elegantly floral touches. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it has a firm texture and powdery tannins, leading to a long, spicy and lead pencil-inflected finish. Composed of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, this vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent years—comparable to vintages such as 1993, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2020—and should gain harmony with the élevage. In the context of the vintage, this is a notable success, owing in large part to Haut-Brion’s intramural position in Pessac, where the estate’s terroir benefits from slightly warmer average temperatures than properties located outside the city, contributing to more complete ripening of the grapes.

Elegant and complex, the red wine of Château Haut-Brion is very mineral and of a rare complexity, it is distinguished by an astonishing length, this aromatic persistence being the privilege of very great origins.
2024 Tasting Note
A beautiful, deep garnet red color. The initial nose is intense, very fruity, and ripe. Upon swirling, these sensations are amplified; it's captivating! The entry into the mouth is broad, fleshy, and refined. The wine fills the mouth with a soft, generous presence. The tannins are very present, juicy, and smooth. The three grape varieties have combined to create a perfectly balanced blend of aromas, flavors, and tannins. It's simply delicious and so full of promise!
The climate
Although 2024 was notable for its cool weather, it was nevertheless preceded by a mild and wet winter, leading to early budburst as early as mid-March. This advance was, however, moderated by persistent rainfall, which slowed vegetative growth. In the vineyards, teams were fully mobilized from the beginning of spring to meticulously monitor the health of the vineyard, as the mild winter encouraged early pressure from fungal diseases. Flowering, which was late, took place in good conditions for the whites and more unevenly for the reds, with some coulures linked to the changeable weather. July marked a turning point, offering favorable conditions for the development of the vine. The rest of the season required meticulous green work, essential to balance the quantity of green organs and protect the grapes. Careful leaf removal was carried out to ensure better aeration of the bunches and limit humidity, thus preserving the integrity and quality of the grapes. The resilience of the vines, supported and accompanied by the unwavering determination of the teams, enabled us to bring a demanding season to a close, which offered us beautiful, expressive fruits and promising juices.
After a slow growing season, the early-ripening terroir of Haut-Brion played its role as facilitator by allowing the desired alcohol levels to be reached quickly, and therefore allowing the harvest to begin with a preserved state of health. The white grape harvest took place in good conditions, having benefited from cool nights, combined with relatively warm days which favored the aromatic development of the grapes. The first juices of the white grapes offered beautiful balances, more moderate alcohol levels than in previous years and aromatic profiles of beautiful finesse, with expressive Sauvignons. Before the start of the red grape harvest, six days of a northeast wind helped to dry out the vines, thus refining the concentration of the berries while maintaining the health of the vineyard. The harvest delivered grapes rich in flavor and a meticulous sorting was carried out upon arrival at the winery, ensuring that only berries at perfect maturity and health quality were retained. If this balancing act vintage cultivated contrasts right up to the harvest, it was to ultimately offer a final bouquet of expressive fruits, future indicators of wines full of promise.
