Chateau Cheval Blanc St-Emilion Grand Cru *ETA Q3, 2027 En-Primeur* 2024 750ml

The 2024 Château Cheval Blanc is a beautifully refined wine from a challenging vintage, showing the estate’s trademark finesse and precision. With just 12.8% alcohol, it delivers elegance over power, led by a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Critics praise its layered complexity, fresh red fruit, and polished structure—another standout from this iconic Saint-Émilion estate.

So succulent and long on the compacted palate, this shows just enough clean ripe berries as well as cedar and chocolate. This has polished, energizing tannins with a lovely and thoughtful drive, the light austerity giving the wine a push in the finish. Only 12.8% alcohol. A blend of 46% merlot, 48% cabernet franc and 6% cabernet sauvignon.

A blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 48% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Château Cheval Blanc is one of the stars of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of minty berries and plums mingled with violets, cigar wrapper and rose petals, it's medium-bodied, suave and complete, with a cool, layered core of fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and a long, aromatic finish. Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team conducted an aggressive green harvest and also, exceptionally, used densimetric sorting to mitigate heterogenous maturity between and within bunches (a consequence of a protracted flowering), accepting losses to rot in pursuit of full maturity. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare at harvest, but some 34% of that was eliminated between sorting and press wine (which is never retained at Cheval Blanc). Of what fermented, however, 70% ended up in the grand vin.
One of Bordeaux's most complex terroirs, Cheval Blanc sits on the site of an ancient river delta, with (to generalize) clay-rich soils in the lower-lying parts where rivulets once flowed and gravel and sand elsewhere. This complexity is reflected, of course, in the resulting wine but also in how it is farmed and made, with thoughtful use of cover crops according to soil type and parcel-by-parcel vinification. A concerted effort is being made, moreover, to bring life back to the vineyard, with hedges of native species to act as wildlife corridors and fruit trees planted among the vines. The same attention to detail that's applied in the vineyards, for example with regard to developing and testing an in-house massal selection, is applied in the cellar, where cooperage trials are notable for their exigence. All of that shows in the glass.

Drink: 2032-2050
Strawberry and red berry fragrance, a touch herbal, milk chocolate, florality with blackcurrant and cherry. Smooth and supple, this has a softly chalky, almost creamy charm with blue fruits on the palate. Light weight and delicate for sure, but the tannins are extremely well incorporated giving this a round frame. Finessed, not too tight at all, relaxed. More vertical acidity behind that pushes the flavours forward. Layered and complex with the saltiness coming in on the finish. It’s easy to drink and super refreshing. Classic but with charm rather than tension and too much coolness. Really balanced but still nuanced on the finish, this is multi-layered. I like this a lot. 3.61pH. Densimetric sorting. 70% grand vin production. Vinified 28hl/ha.

Since it won its first medal, still featured on its labels, at the Universal Exhibition of London in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines. Its grace, alchemy and elegance are the incarnation of refined French culture, of unparalleled quality.
Château Cheval Blanc has been situated in the commune of Saint-Emilion for 200 years. It covers 39.5 hectares divided into 55 plots, each of which is different and unique. Each plot has its own characteristics according to its age, size and, in particular, its soil and grape variety. Each plot is vinified separately so that it can express its individuality fully before blending and so that it can contribute to the overall coherence of each vintage.
Château Cheval Blanc has always been managed with longevity in mind: all the particularities of this legendary Bordeaux have been preserved throughout the years – its terroir, grape varieties and style – whilst its qualities continue to become more refined and assertive. Thanks to the mineral and vegetal heritage and increasingly rigorous know-how, Château Cheval Blanc has made a place for itself on the most prestigious tables across the globe for over a century and a half.
