I love the aromas of bark, mushrooms and wet earth with dark fruit. Turns to ink and black olives. Full-bodied with chewy and intense tannins, yet there’s real polish and length to this. Still tight, but starting to come through. Blend of 100 parcels of old vines with an average age of 50 years, some as old as 120 years. Drinkable now, but better in 2025.

The 2017 Numanthia represents a blend of their terroirs selected from over 100 plots of ungrafted vines, and it fermented with commercial yeasts and matured in 225- and 400-liter French oak barrels, 60% of them new, for 18 months. They lost 30% of the crop to frost, and then it was warm and dry and the grapes ripened thoroughly. They made an effort to remove all the raisins and did a softer vinification to moderate the extraction. It's ripe at 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.79 and is quite harmonious, big and rich but with no excess and with integrated oak. 76,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.
Numanthia, bought by LVMH in 2008, started the transformation of their wines eight years ago, harvesting earlier, doing less extraction and using less new oak and larger barrels and vats. At the same time, they decided to release the wines with more time in bottle—Numanthia five years after the harvest and Termanthia seven. They have obtained organic certification for their over 100 hectares of vineyards and are in the process of certifying their main external suppliers. They produce 220,000 bottles. The wines are still powerful, ripe and concentrated but with better-integrated oak and more harmony than in the past.
