Just like last year, this patch of the Eden Valley has turned out a magnificent wine. The 2018 Yacca Block Menglers Hill Shiraz boasts fragrant notes of violets and blueberries spiced with hints of cinnamon, caramel and roasted meat. It's the biggest of the Block wines, labeled at 14.3% alcohol, but despite being full-bodied, comes across as impeccably balanced. It's fleshy and generous, but supple tannins, which turn silky on the lengthy finish, keep the overall impression one of savory elegance.

Aromas of poached plums and spiced pastry abound here with violets, blackcurrants and mulberries, too. The palate has an elegant structure of fine, polished tannin with attractive, deep-set flavors. A spicy twist to close. The tannins hold well. Soft and drinkable already.

Perched high up on the hillside of the Eden Valley, this beautifully positioned vineyard is surrounded by ancient Yaccas. The soil here is a mix of both quartz and ironstone and the vineyard?s high altitude allows for slow ripening that leads to a very soft and elegant Shiraz.

Deep dark red.

Aroma
Notes of black cherry, blueberry, green and black peppercorn, cut flower, green tobacco and fresh hung meat.

Palate
Hits the palate with plenty of vibrant primary fruits black cherry and blueberry complimented by fresh acidity. Medium to full-bodied, tightly coiled with plenty of reserved power. Chalky, savoury tannins roll through the mid-palate with a finish that is accented with complexing notes of spice, pepper and freshly cut flower. The finish is very long and refined.
