Source: Winemaker,
Puligny-Montrachet (pronounced Mont-Rachet) shares with Chassagne the most perfect expression of Chardonnay. Only a few meters from the Grands Crus, the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée instituted in 1937 offers a white wine with a strong personality and a high reputation. The vines are mainly planted on limestone soil, sometimes deep or even on hard rock. Exposures to the east and south-east between 230 and 320 meters above sea level.
Takes its name from "Pul", radical meaning swamp. The village of Puligny-Montrachet is installed on small pockets of water preventing any construction of buried cellars.
