The 2011 Léoville Poyferré is an elegant and intense wine with a deep garnet color and evolving aromas of black fruit, oak, and spice. The tannins are fine and juicy, giving the wine a solid structure. Notes of liquorice and spices linger on the persistent finish. The blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot shows the wine's precision, with a balance of intensity and delicious fruit. While it's still evolving, it is a standout for the vintage, with good aging potential.

Densely-structured fruit backed up by firm tannins, not as ready to drink as some of the St-Juliens, and I would give it another three or four years to fully soften - or keep open for a good few hours before drinking. This is impressive for the vintage, it delivers both precision and creamy blackberry fruit. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

This property, which has been on a qualitative tear over the last generation, has produced one of the most successful wines of 2011. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it is broad, rich, medium to full-bodied and dense. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as lots of concentration, silky tannins, and a bigger, richer mouthfeel than any of its St.-Julien peers. The result is one of the stars of the vintage.

Blackberry and currant aromas with hints of minerals. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Chewy and reserved. Just the right amount of fruit covering the tannins. Harmony for the vintage. Better in 2017.

Tasted blind. Very deep colour and quite a bit of smooth richness. But just a tad overdone. Lacks the freshness of some of its peers – a bit sweeter. Though there is still a lot of tannin underneath the sweet fruit. Poyferré?

    2011 The year of precision
Precision in working the soil in dry years is essential. Accompanied by leaf thinning, this limits water evaporation from the soil and the vine. Our new optical sorter allowed for precise selection of naturally concentrated grape berries.

The sorter is calibrated for each variety, and is able to eliminate any unripe grapes. Pre-fermentation cold macerations revealed the purity of the fruit and aromas.

Vinifications and pump-overs were adapted to target gentle extractions of tannins and color, while the duration and temperature of vatting optimized the quality of tannins. This vintage is the perfect combination of intensity and delicious fruit.

    Our tasting notes – 2022
The 2011 vintage of Château Léoville Poyferré displays an intense garnet color and purple reflections. The wine remains bright and limpid, a sign that it continues to flourish.

Starting to show some evolution, expressive notes of black fruit, oak and spice meld together in this beautiful 2011 vintage, intensifying with light aeration.

This Saint-Julien is fine and elegant with a juicy tannic structure.  Aromas of black fruit and spices dominate, revealing notes of liquorice on the persistent finish.
