The 2014 Château Figeac is a poised and expressive Saint-Émilion, blending 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 28% Cabernet Franc. It opens with black fruit, cedar, and subtle spice, showing freshness and structure with firm, fine tannins. Elegant yet energetic, it promises graceful evolution and long-term aging potential.

Here is a 2014 that entices with its aromatic subtlety for a core of spicy black fruit. The attack is lively and although the palate has a moderately dense structure to it, the tannins are still a bit firm at this stage. There is a hint of bell pepper and tobacco on the finish that amplify an impression of freshness on the long, airy finish. This is a lovely wine possessing real terroir expression.

The 2014 Figeac builds on its promise from barrel and delivers a very fulfilling bouquet with red plum, crushed strawberry, cedar and light graphite aromas that I suspect will close down for a period after bottling. (The bottle tasted at the ch?teau displayed a subtle incense aroma.) The palate is very well defined with a crisp line of acidity, sorbet fresh in the mouth and fanning out towards its structured, tensile finish. It is a great Figeac, a superb forerunner to the brilliant 2015 and it should not be underestimated. Chapeau winemaker Frederic Faye and his team. Tasted twice (both in London and at the property) with consistent notes.

The open nose of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and bitter chocolate pulls you into this ample St.-Emilion that has a very satisfying interplay of sweet fruit and moderately dry tannins. Has only just shaken off the first phase of youthful effusiveness, but still has plenty of life left in it. Long, quite dry finish with a delicate mint-chocolate note. Drink or hold. Château Quintus vertical tasting.

Tasted blind. Dark, youthful colour. Youthfully fragrant too with dark fruit and cedar. Taut, fresh, fine and modulated tannins. Excellent balance and freshness if still quite chewy as the tannins build up in your mouth. Long, too.

    Chateau-figeac.com

Château-Figeac owes its distinctive character to the unique combination of Gunzian gravel outcrops and clay subsoil, several microclimates and the mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot planted in the vineyard. This unusual blend, with its majority two-thirds Cabernet, gives the wine both structure and refinement, freshness and smoothness. Since the early years of the present century the wine has become more approachable in its youth, offering a more caressing mouthfeel, without losing its incomparable uprightness over the years.

Château-Figeac has always been acknowledged as one of the top Bordeaux wines with the best ageing potential, gaining a highly flavourful and succulent complexity over the years. It can be enjoyed just as much in its youth as after several decades.
First to be appreciated is the colour, with deep shades of crimson that recall Tyrian purple. On the nose, the wildly appealing Merlot notes of its youth give way to striking depth that is balm to the soul of all Cabernet lovers.
Its aromas reflect the lightness of the soil, expressed in a highly subtle, ethereal bouquet in which notes of peony, infused fruit and graphite demonstrate bright vitality. The two-thirds of Cabernet in the blend quite literally sculpt the body, strengthening the grip from the mid-palate and rolling out a long, taut and vibrant backbone with very pure mineral notes on the finish. The whole is perfectly enfolded in lush, satin tannins in the style of the highest of high fashion. With time, the wine develops flavours of tobacco-leaf with hints of black truffle, while retaining incomparable freshness of fruit. A glimpse of perfection…

Its ability to age for decades is quite exceptional, revealing an inimitable and complex bouquet as the years go by.
