A new addition to the lineup, the 2020 Dreams of Gold Shiraz comes from relatively young vines, planted in 1997 and 2013. Aged in older French oak, it boasts scents of “Eden Valley garrigue”?notes that suggest eucalyptus, bay leaf and wild thyme?set against a backdrop of blueberries. Less intense and concentrated than the other bottlings, it’s still medium to full-bodied, suave and silky in feel, with a clean, mouthwatering finish and a soft dusting of tannins.
Barr-Eden Estate is the new name for the Love Over Gold partnership between Tim Howser, Joel Mattschoss, Pierre-Henri Morel and Michael Twelftree. Morel is the general manager of Two Hands and Howser and Twelftree are owners of Two Hands, while Mattschoss is a grape grower, with vines on Mengler’s Hill. The Love Over Gold Shiraz is sourced from vines planted in the 1920s, while the Avenue to Gold bottling comes from younger vines. Quantities of the top wines are very limited (25 cases of the Grenache and 50 cases of the Shiraz) and fall into the price category of “If you have to ask…,” but the Dreams of Gold Shiraz, which comes from young vines, is more affordable and made in larger volumes.

Handpicked early morning, the 23rd of March, Dreams of Gold comes from vines planted in 1997 and 2013. The wine has been made in a 4 tonne fermenter and stayed on skin for 18 days before being pressed in a small basket press.
Winemaker Notes: The latest addition to the Estate comes from the youngest blocks of the property planted in 2013 and is complemented with the 1997 shiraz. Handpicked for the first time in 2020, Dreams of Gold is a bright purple, vivid colour. It exhibits vibrant red fruits with minty eucalypt and winter greens on the nose. These aromatics pass through on the palate and complement the soft supple tannins. This is a perfect example of Eden Valley Shiraz, seductive and elegant with great balance and length. It’s surprisingly very approachable and the bottle doesn’t last long around the table. 8,400 bottles made.
