For the very first time, with the help of an expert panel, under the sign of the coffee mill at 3 St James’s Street, the world’s top 50 Chinese restaurants will be named on 8 February 2017, the 12th Day of the Year of the Rooster, at Berry Bros & Rudd, the UK’s oldest continuous wine merchant and holder of two Royal Warrants.
Paris and London have one restaurant each. So do Australia and Malaysia. Who has the most? Hong Kong, China’s Special Administrative Region, commands the lion share of 15 of the world’s top Chinese restaurants. (Maybe that’s what really makes the former British colony special, not the so-called one country two systems arrangement).
Between Beijing, Guangdong, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shaoxing, Suzhou and Yangzhou, China is at the summit of the culinary mountain with 26 of the world’s top Chinese restaurants including one named by the Qianlong Emperor, another run by a descendant of Beijing opera’s most celebrated female voice, and yet another at the foot of Hangzhou’s famed
West Lake that serves the favourite dish of China’s most famous scholar-literatum (who was banished twice by two rather thin-skinned emperors during the Northern Song Dynasty).
