Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT 2019 750ml

From the legendary estate behind Sassicaia, Guidalberto has firmly established itself as one of Bolgheri’s great wines in its own right. The 2019 vintage is full-bodied, elegant and refined, with layers of blackberry, plum, currant and bramble fruit lifted by hints of mint, licorice, orange zest and tobacco. Silky tannins and fresh acidity provide structure and balance, while the Merlot adds approachability without sacrificing age-worthiness. Already highly acclaimed this wine offers superb value and will shine now or evolve beautifully over the next decade.

This enticing red offers alluring aromas of fragrant purple flowers, dark-skinned berries and crushed mint. The elegantly structured palate doles out succulent blackberry, orange zest, licorice and saline notes set against taut, refined tannins. It's nicely balanced by fresh acidity.

Guidalberto is still considered the 'second vin' of Sassicaia but this is a terrible mistake - first of all, its blend is completely different, as is the selection of the grapes. Secondly, the quality of the tannins today is excellent. In good - if not great - vintages such as 2019, Guidalberto shines for its classic style of sleek bramble fruit, astonishing elegance of the tannins, and the signature freshness of the estate. The suppleness of Merlot helps this wine to become more approachable sooner, yet no less ageworthy.

Plum, currant and fresh-herb aromas follow through to a medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, linear finish. It’s clear and already delicious, but another year or two will improve it.

First vintage 2000. Near-final blend; final blending and bottling end February 2021. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Merlot grown on a neighbouring estate, outside Bolgheri. TA 5.95, pH 3.52, RS 0.11 g/l.
Mid ruby with a touch of sediment – a sample blend, rather than a finished wine, as with the last two release presentations. Quite reticent on the nose, just giving hints of what it’s got – a flash of creamy vanilla, a scent of ripe, plummy, black fruit and some toasted tobacco. Full bodied, with mouth-coating but fine-grained tannins. Plump and velvety – Merlot making its presence felt here. Pretty good length too. This is embryonic and a little closed, but I think has plenty to give – an attractive Guidalberto that will reward cellaring.

Guidalberto is born as a tribute to the ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneer of agriculture in the Bolgheri area who, in the early decades of the 1800s, built the first factories and churches and designed the Cypress Avenue.
Guidalberto marks the new millennium: the 2000 vintage appears on the market. The label represents the Oratory of San Guido and the wine is named after the family ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an agricultural pioneer in the Bolgheri area. It was in the first decades of the 1800’s when he built the first factories, and churches, and planned the avenue of cypress trees, the Viale dei Cipressi. These trees were initially used to mark the boundaries between the different crops. Its ornamental value, with the tall cypresses running in double rows, came after that.
