Domaine Rebourgeon-Mure Volnay 1er Cru “Santenots” 2022 – A refined and concentrated Volnay Premier Cru from old vines (planted 1954) on red limestone and gravel soils bordering Meursault. Deeply colored and richly aromatic, it shows layers of sweet plum, cherry, spice, and subtle smoky notes. The palate is seamless and polished, combining power with Volnay’s hallmark finesse. Elegant, balanced, and age-worthy, this classic expression offers purity and texture with a long, graceful finish.

Dense dark purple. A slight oxidation is evident on the nose of this sample. Fine concentrated and rather sumptuous dark red fruit on the palate, no worries there. This promises to be a very good example, with more intensity than many this year. Scored on the basis that this will be cleaned up before bottling.

Seamless and suave, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots offers up aromas of sweet plums, cherries, vine smoke and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and charming palate that's polished and enveloping.

David Rebourgeon directs this eight-hectare Pommard domaine that continues to fly somewhat under the radar. Plowed soils and minimal chemical treatments are the order of the day in the vineyards; some parcels even see a permanent cover crop and treatments with a backpack spray. In the cuverie and cellars, the grapes are entirely destemmed, seeing a classical maceration emphasizing gentle extraction. Élevage lasts for 14 to 18 months in modest percentages of new oak. The result is elegant and beautifully balanced wines that display excellent textural finesse and which might justly be described as understated—even slightly old-fashioned—in style. This is an address that will delight Burgundy purists and which also happens to offer keen value.

The Volnay Santenots has the distinction of being harvested in Meursault, which it borders.

For about two hundred years, the custom arose of calling the great red wines harvested on this land Volnay Santenots.

"Firm, full-bodied, beautifully coloured, rich in alcohol and bouquet, straightforward in taste and with good aging potential, this powerful nectar, which possesses a remarkable personality, seems to combine all the richness of the great wines of the Côte de Nuits with the finesse of the Volnays it borders." wrote Camille Rodier, in his book Les Grands Vins de Bourgogne in 1931.

This vine was planted in 1954 on red limestone soils, interspersed with gravel and clay.

It produces a powerful, concentrated and elegant first vintage, which is generally not afraid of long aging.
