Château Gruaud Larose 2005 750ml is a powerful and classically structured Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé from an outstanding Bordeaux vintage. It opens with deep aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, licorice, and spice, layered with earthy undertones, menthol, and subtle eucalyptus. The palate is medium to full-bodied with silky, fine-grained tannins, delivering both richness and freshness in a long, inky, and concentrated finish. Combining traditional Left Bank structure with surprising early approachability, this 2005 vintage shows excellent balance, depth, and ageing potential through 2040.

This is always a wine that has split opinion in 2005. In this example I found a beautifully balanced nose of subtle black fruit showing great power and intensity. A rustic edge. Menthol and eucalyptus help deliver some refreshing notes that bely the power. The palate has silky fine tannins, with an inky and blackberry filled finish. An exceptionally good Gruaud.

The 2005 Gruaud Larose has a deep ruby/purple color, excellent concentration, and clean, pure black and red currant fruit, licorice and spice. It is medium to full-bodied, lush, and very soft and round. I’m surprised how drinkable it is already, although it is certainly capable of lasting 15 or more years.

Deep, shaded blackish ruby. Light, rather sweaty nose. Relatively simple. A toothsome mouthful with the tannins receding if tasted in isolation but trumped by some of these wines. (JR)
