Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune Greves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus Premier Cru 2014 750ml
Elegant and floral with notes of ripe strawberry, sandalwood, and a hint of spice. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a touch of white pepper on the finish. A leaner, more delicate vintage that’s drinking well now but still has room to evolve.

This monopole vineyard came into the Bouchard family in 1791, 60 years after the maison was founded. This wine is smoky and full of fruit and sweet tannins. With its balanced tannins and rich fruits, it is developing well. The dense structure behind the fruit promises good aging. Drink from 2020.

This is always a very pretty wine with flowers, ripe strawberries and sandalwood. Medium body, fine tannins and a salty, white-pepper character at the end. Slightly aggressive tannins. Drink or hold.

40% new oak. Winemaker Frederic Weber reports that the low juice-to-skin ratio on the Côte de Beaune was challenging – and only around 15% whole bunch here (compared with the more usual 40% on the Côte de Nuits). He also transferred all the new oak lots into old oak before the 2015 harvest.
Mid ruby (definitely lighter and less blue than the Monthelie Duresses). Very distinctive nose. Are BP&F using a new cooper? (More Chassin and less toast, apparently – like so many.) Relatively lightweight and a bit light on charm and fruit. Seems to be an attempt to fight the vintage instead of producing charming, relatively low-tannin wines. Still a bit raw but without great fruit and extract.

The name 'Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus' refers to an old story. It is said that Marguerite du Saint Sacrement, the founding carmelite of the 'Domestiques de la famille du Saint Enfant Jesus' predicted the birth of the king of France, Louis XIV, although her mother, Anne of Austria was sterile. On the birth of the future 'Roi Soleil', this exceptional vineyard which belonged to the Carmelites, took on the name 'Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus'. In 1791, when all national property was sold, Bouchard Pere & Fils put in a bid for the vineyard, situated in the heart of the 32 hectares of the Beaune Greves appellation, of which it still has the monopoly today.
