La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan 2019 750ml

A beautifully balanced second wine from La Mission, offering elegance, power, and finesse. Layers of violet, raspberry, blackberry, and cherry unfold with subtle oak and spice. The palate is smooth, rich, and full-bodied with fine, almost invisible tannins and vibrant freshness. Made from a near-even blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it shows great structure and aging potential. Best from 2025, but already drinking beautifully.

Wonderfully perfumed with violets and essence of raspberries that follow through to a medium to full body with totally integrated tannins that are tight and poised. You almost can’t “see” the tannins, but you feel them. Best after 2025, but already so pretty.

Intense but subtle, with high aromatics. Loaded with flavour and sap, extremely juicy, savoury but welcoming. Fruit-forward with a creamy texture, this has the elegance that you want from La Chapelle, the sappy fruit that you want to share, and is a great 2nd stepping stone to La Mission. Last year had less Merlot but it works here, giving charm, elegance and mouthwatering appeal. Harvest finished October 4. 27% of production.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, orange rind and rich spices, framed by a deft application of cedary new oak, the 2019 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a more tightly wound profile than its counterpart across the street.

Tasted blind. Intense, well balanced and an interesting nose. Lots of sweetness, but freshness too, in this extremely youthful wine. Difficult to assess at this stage

Produced in small quantities, this second wine is a gateway to the world of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Its name is a nod to the chapel of La Mission Haut-Brion, built by Lazarist priests in 1698.

Beautiful intense red colour.
The nose initially displays fresh, ripe fruity notes.
Lovely hints of oak and vanilla enhance cherry and blackberry aromas with aeration.
The full-bodied and fruity palate reveals all the charming qualities of Merlot, underpinned by smooth, powerful and fresh tannins. The medium-long finish is peppered with spicy overtones.
The weather
The winter of 2018-2019 was mild and dry. Cool temperatures in spring slowed down vine growth. Flowering took place in ideal conditions, without coulure (shot berries) nor millerandage (abnormal fruit set). Storm Miguel swept across the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region on the 7th of June, although our grapes were fortunately spared. Heavy, regular rainfall was conducive to vegetative growth, leading the vines to develop an impressive leaf canopy. The rain came to a sudden halt on the 22nd of June, and a series of successive heatwaves ensued. July was the third hottest in history after 2006 and 2013, with temperatures reaching a record-breaking 42°C on the 23rd. Fortunately, rain fell on the 26th, followed by cool nights in August, propitious to the synthesis of anthocyanins. Véraison (colour change) was slow but uninterrupted. September was marked by fine, dry and sunny conditions, interspersed by welcome rainfall. Thanks to this ideal spell of weather, all the grape varieties were harvested at peak ripeness and at a leisurely pace.
