Olivier Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 750ml

A powerhouse of a white Burgundy — rich, intense, and built to age. This Grand Cru shows lemon, butter, and vanilla on the nose, with a palate that’s both full and lifted by bright acidity. The weight comes through on the finish, backed by superb persistence. Made from 100% Chardonnay grown in the legendary vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, aged 20 months (30% new oak). 2020 was an early, warm vintage with perfect grape health, giving wines of wonderful balance and depth. This one will reward patience — decant a couple of hours before serving if drinking young.

Similar colour, with clearly greater weight immediately obvious, not heavy. Maybe a first hint of honeysuckle. Solid and spicy on the palate, so far away from being ready to bottle let alone drink. Superb intensity of course, extra weight comes mostly at the back of the palate, the acidity holds it up very well, impressive persistence, all very fine indeed.

It is told the lord of Puligny-Montrachet shared his estate among his children: The eldest son or "Knight" (Chevalier), his daughters or "Virgins" (Pucelles) and "Bastard" (Bâtard). Each had his hand and three climates have kept their names Chevalier-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles and Bâtard-Montrachet.
The 2020 vintage is a unique vintage. It is marked by historic precocity from budburst, with an advance of 3 weeks, until the harvest which took place entirely in the month of August. High temperatures associated with a lack of precipitation cause a significant water deficit as well as evapotranspiration phenomena in July and August. The absence of rain, on the other hand, allows the health of the grapes to be very satisfactory. The particular conditions of this vintage generate wonderful balances.

Tasting note
Wine of powerful and generous character. The nose has notes of lemon but also notes of butter and vanilla . The palate is fairly tensed with acidity. The wine is fat with maturity and fills the mouth with flavor. It needs time to be tasted in its peak. It may deserve to be placed in carafe two hours before.
Food pairings
Perfect with Bresse fattened chicken with a creamy morel sauce.
