The 2012 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente Riserva shows signs of the warm vintage. The quality of fruit is ripe, succulent and sweet, but the mouthfeel is slightly shorter and a tiny degree thinner. In fact, this wine reminds me very much of Brunello di Montalcino from the same vintage. That is no coincidence. In fact, Poggio Valente is a valiant red wine from Coastal Tuscany that rivals the best of Montalcino in terms of quality and philosophy. One of Luca's big changes at the winery is that he is moving the wines gradually over to bigger oak containers. He finds that the larger containers add more depth and nuance, especially with a grape like Sangiovese. Marchesi Antinori’s Pian delle Vigne estate has had its share of ups and downs and somehow its “down by the railroad tracks” association has stuck on some distant metaphoric level despite its best marketing efforts to the contrary. The estate is located on the lower plains of the Camigliano area near an old rail station on the outer perimeter of the Brunello appellation. Because its owners are from oh-so-far-away Florence, Pian delle Vigne has been saddled with an “outsiders” status within the tightly-knit Montalcino growers’ community. Truth is, estates like Pian delle Vigne (representing important outside financial investments in vineyards, distribution and promotions) have done much to elevate Brunello to the pinnacle of the world winemaking elite.

www.antinori.it

Pian delle Vigne has adopted the philosophy of aging in large casks that preserve the exceptional integrity of the Sangiovese berry and impart the characteristic vibrant elegance of Brunello to the wine. Brunello Pian delle Vigne is an extraordinary expression with great finesse.

Climate
The 2017 growing season will be remembered for hot dry climate trends both in winter and during spring/summer. These climatic conditions prompted early bud break, limited the vines? vegetative development and reduced the size of the clusters; however, the berries were perfectly whole and healthy at harvest time.

Targeted agronomic practices and frequent soil management techniques helped the vines get maximum benefits from this year's limited groundwater reserves.

Rain showers at the beginning of September slightly lowered temperatures and provided much needed relief to the vines, allowing the grapes to ripen uniformly and reach well-balanced maturity. Harvesting activities began at the beginning of September and were completed on September 26th, slightly earlier than seasonal averages.

Vinification
Harvested grapes were brought to the cellar, destemmed, gently crushed and transferred into stainless steel vats where alcoholic fermentation occurred. Maceration on the skins took place over a period of approximately 12 days at a controlled temperature of 28 C (82 F). After malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to oak barrels of varying capacities, between 30 and 80 hl, where it aged in the barrel for two years. Pian delle Vigne was then bottled and aged for a lengthy period before being released.

Historical Data
The Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6 kilometers (3.5 miles) southwest of Montalcino. Its name comes from the eponymous area where a characteristic nineteenth century railway station is located. The property consists of 460 total acres (184 hectares), 160 of which (65 hectares) are planted to vines with generally a south-western exposure at an altitude of 430 feet (130 meters) above sea level. The estate, since the very beginning, has followed a philosophy based on aging in large casks capable of preserving the exceptional integrity and fruit of the Sangiovese grapes and endow this Brunello with a characteristic vibrant elegance. Pian delle Vigne has belonged to the Antinori family since 1995, the the year of the first Pian delle Vigne vintage.

Tasting Notes
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is an intense ruby red color. After destemming, he lets the fruit rest for 24 to 36 hours. The process is delicate enough to leave a good amount of whole berries (which could be a contributing factor to the incredible aromas achieved in his wines). Fermentation kicks off with robust pump-overs that introduce oxygen. This creates what Alessandro Mori calls "a primordial broth" of berries, skins and pulp. He does not do pied de cuve. Ambient yeast withstands high temperatures (from 36 degrees Celsius and sometimes as high as 40 degrees), and skin contact lasts nine to 10 days for the Brunello di Montalcino and 14 or 15 days for the Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie. Cap management is very delicate toward the end, with five minutes of pump-overs in the morning and five minutes at night. This approach fixes the elegant floral aromas of Sangiovese and the phenolic compounds. He presses at two "babo" (a measurement of sugar) or before fermentation is completed and moves the wine into barrel. The unique structure you taste is achieved with hard pressing at 350 atmospheres followed by long barrel aging (lasting up to 41 months) to polymerize or soften the tannins.

Decanter | D 96
Published: Nov 14, 2023
Drink: 2024-2037

Il Marroneto is one of Montalcino’s most consistently outstanding producers, in challenging and celebrated vintages alike. Because the Cerretalto was not produced, fruit from that vineyard with its reddish mineral-rich soils was directed here instead. For that reason, this wine is especially spicy, lifted and intense. Dark cherry fruit is followed by rusty nail, black pepper and milled spice. The wine is fermented in steel tanks, sees 20 days of skin maceration and ages in botte and tonneaux for over three years. The oak is very well integrated. This is a wine of character (with 98,000 bottles made).

In 2020, the Neri family did not make its flagship wine, Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. Grapes for that wine were directed to the white-label 2020 Brunello di Montalcino instead. It's been exciting to watch an evolution of style underway at this winery that comes with a new generation now fully involved in the cellar. Giacomo Neri's winemaking style focused on more concentration with pump-overs and punch-downs, but sons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo have tweaked the house style to focus on less extraction and more fruit balance instead. They are experimenting with softer cap management, bigger woods and some whole-cluster fermentation (used partially in the Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri, for example).
