For three centuries and across 13 generations, the family has produced wines that are structured, longlived, fruity, elegant and balanced: the celebrated Trimbach style. The family personally looks after each operation, from planting to harvests and from vinification to bottling. The viticultural origin of the Trimbach family dates back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach, was recognized as a citizen of Riquewihr. From then on, the Trimbach's were renowned for their wine-growing. Maison Trimbach's vineyards are all situated around Ribeauville (Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Bergheim, Rorschwihr, Riquewihr and Mittlewihr). They benefit from the unique Alsatian microclimate, thanks to the Vosges Mountains protection, which preserves the plain from the rain. The vineyards were planted on the Ribeauville's fault line that fractured 50 million years ago between the Vosges Mountain range and the Black Forest offering a mosaic of terroirs including the complex calcareous limestone and bio-degraded seashell fossils called Muschelkalk.

WINEMAKING & VINTAGE NOTES
The vines are 50 years old from Ribeauvill's top sites such as Grand Cru Rosacker and the highly regarded Muhlforst. Soils are marl and limestone. Handpicked as late as possible in order to achieve maximum ripeness, which in turn, gives optimum depth of flavor and complexity. The grapes are pressed very gently in a pneumatic press. The juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks.

The wine is not oak-aged, and is vinified to complete dryness with no residual sugar. Bottling is done early to preserve freshness, and the wine rests in bottle in the cellar for several years before reaching the marketplace, ensuring the wine is both ready to drink upon release but also can be cellared.

TASTING NOTES
Elegant, dry and precise. The fruit balances the acid out so well and it draws you along the palate and leaves you with no tartness or bitterness, just a mouth-watering succulence. Rain continued through December 2021 and January 2022, adding more disease pressure than most seasons. As summer went on the conditions were very mild with some humidity from the north creating the occasional issue to control. In all this meant that the fruit had to mature on the vine for longer than normal, but luckily the weather stabilised and we were able to bring in a healthy smaller crop of fruit with a natural higher acidity than the previous season. Cool climate viticulture is all about risk and reward and that is what we have in our 2022 Riesling.

VINIFICATION
The fruit was whole bunch pressed then chilled to 4° with minimal Sulphur added in Coal River Valley after being picked on the 16th of April. Barren sites also suffered from the drought, as there was no water available. The supply of nutrients was also problematic due to the drought, but then there was rain in September. The plants breathed a sigh of relief, but the berries also soaked up the water and therefore hardly increased in must weight. Sorting was therefore also a top priority in the fall of 2022. Even more than rot (there was hardly any noble botrytis, but there was gray rot), dried-out, unripe berries made life difficult for the harvesters. These were not allowed in the bucket under any circumstances, even if they looked healthy, and should actually be cut to the ground before the main harvest. Rotten and noble rotten berries are taboo at Schloss Johannisberg for all wines below the Spätlese and Auslese predicates. This limited-production wine is from a parcel of extremely old vines (alte Reben). It is fermented with indigenous yeasts and kept in the barrel, on the full lees, for a year before it is bottled. They selected favorites from each decade and blended them into a new, non-vintage Spätlese that will be marketed next year, the anniversary year, as Schloss Johannisberg Ex Bibliotheca Cuvée 100 Spätlese. It is supposed to express the great aging potential of Schloss Johannisberger's Spätlese (late harvest) from the last 100 years. Occasionally, one can indeed bid for an old Schloss Johannisberger Spätlese, but they're at prices that only true enthusiasts can afford. The anniversary wine is to be sold at a comparatively moderate price level, but the exact amount has not yet been determined. The wine, however, has been defined and bottled in June. The cuvée is limited to 1,000 bottles, and all of the base wines come from the Bibliotheca Subterranea, the estate's underground treasure trove, which is considered the first Riesling vineyard in the world. Each bottle will come in a decorative wooden box, along with a booklet about its history and the underlying vintages. The cuvée has a natural sugar content of 62 grams per liter with an acidity of 7.6 grams per liter and is pleasingly salty and piquant. It is an extraordinary drinking experience in any case, and the maturity of a great Riesling is incomparable to anything else in the world. The NV Schloss Johannisberg Ex Bibliotheca Cuvée 100 Spätlese combines the finest Spätlese bottlings between 1915 and 2011, which add up to 36 vintages. This golden-yellow beauty opens with a clear, precise and elegant Spätlese bouquet that represents all the class and potential of the Schloss Johannisberg. It is pure, deep, intense and elegant and as flinty and floral as it is fruity and most of all elegant and beautifully balanced. This is an irresistible wine with an immaculate texture and highly stimulating salinity and mineral grip. Honey, white nougat and apricot flavors populate the palate and the finish, and the wine is intense in a very elegant and mouth-coating yet weightless way. It is rich but refined and elegant, vital and refreshing and to be enjoyed in large sips. The wine is moderately sweet, and the finish is intense and very long. Ripe and juicy apricots and morel/porcini notes make this a savory gastronomic wine that is immediately great and unique in style. How can we rate it? It has remarkable finesse and savoriness with lovely tropical fruit aromas, and it's very harmonious and a true representative of the glorious Schloss Johannisberg. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that he had vines in some of Germany's best-rated vineyards. To maximize the potential of those vines, he restricts crop size, uses only organic fertilization, insists on very strict fruit selection, and employs gentle cellar practices with a minimum of handling.

THE MOSEL REGION
Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley's steep, southfacing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity.

WEHLENER SONNENUHR RIESLING KABINETT
The famous sundial vineyard, in the village of Wehlen, produces the quintessential Mosel Riesling: delicate and refined, with a racy texture and endless charm. The early picked Kabinett is the lightest and most delicate style of German Riesling. Nothing can compare with its elegance and subtlety, as this wine proves with its fine fruitiness and exquisite balance.

TECHNICAL INFO
Grape Variety: 100% Riesling
Soil Type: Blue Devonian slate
Age of Vines: 60 years average; ungrafted
Viticulture: Sustainable, according to strict German environmental regulations
Average Yield: 50 hl/ha
Harvest Method: Selective hand picking
Vinification: Cool fermentation in a combination of stainless steel tanks and traditional

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/7728/6464/files/Dr-Loosen-Wehlener-Sonnenuhr-Riesling-Kabinett.jpg?v=1711645993
