A structured and expressive Pauillac showing layers of blackcurrant, dark berries, cedar, and mineral notes. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and vibrant acidity, this wine balances muscle with finesse. Still youthful, it will reward patience with depth, elegance, and long-lasting complexity.

Aromas of currants, blackberries and blackcurrants with hints of chocolate and spices. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Juicy and muscular wine. Needs three or four years to open. Beautiful.

The 2014 Lynch-Bages is full of promise, offering up a classic bouquet of rich but vibrant blackcurrant fruit mingled with with hints of loamy soil, cedar and vanilla pod. Full-bodied, deep and layered, with an abundance of ripe but youthfully assertive tannin, lively acids and a long, resonant finish, it will hit its stride in 10 to 15 years. This is an excellent Lynch-Bages that represents especially good value in the contemporary marketplace.

Oyster shell and sea spray on the nose. Sharp and tangy, acidity is at the fore, bright and upfront before this turns a little lean and focussed with tight tannins and a sleek finish. It's stylish and feels well worked, smooth and has good energy throughout although it does feel like it's lost some weight and instead gained in strictness for the time being. What's left is very enjoyable but this doesn't carry the same impact some of the others do, even lighter ones. Give this some more time.

69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels (75% new).
Deep purple-violet hue. Dark-fruit notes on the nose but still quite reserved. Steely and fresh on attack then minerally and firm on the palate. Dry finish. A touch austere but very Pauillac. Needs a little more time but the potential is there.

    Outstandingly consistent quality…

The estate’s reputation as a top quality wine producer took off in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Over the years, the wines have gained finesse and complexity. Château Lynch-Bages is defined by its outstandingly consistent quality. Vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic that made its reputation.

The wine’s distinctive character has earned it a place amongst Pauillac’s greatest. Generous right from its youth, it develops structure, finesse and elegance as it matures.

The key to the success of the 2014 vintage was the hot dry weather during September and October, with lovely sunny days and cooler nights. Nevertheless, one shouldn’t forget that relatively cool, dry summer in Pauillac (rainfall below 30mm), which prompted the development of remarkable acidity. After five weeks of summery weather, harvesting began on 24 September with the Merlot plants over two consecutive days, followed by the old Merlots along with the young Cabernet Sauvignon.

Following this initial phase, we decided on a break of 3 or 4 days to make the most of the exceptional weather to fine-tune the ripeness of the old Cabernets. Harvesting was then restarted on Monday 6 October, with only 3 teams this year, that is 180 harvesters to allow them time to pick with precision. Harvesting finished on 11 October after 12 days instead of the 13 initially envisaged.

During harvest, all the indicators of a great wine were present: Generous sugar levels enveloping abundant tannins, an intense colour and all nicely balanced by a lovely acidity.

The wine has a deep colour and an aromatic nose; it is rich and unctuous on the palate, perfectly enveloped in silky tannins. This vintage is distinguished by a beautiful balance of power, freshness and elegance.
