The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations.

Vietti is one of the most dynamic wineries in the appellation. Starting with the 2019 vintage, the entire production of Barolo and Barbera is certified organic. This set of new releases comes with three big surprises. There are three new wines in their inaugural release: the single-vineyard Barolo Cerequio (with fruit from La Morra), the Barolo Monvigliero from Verduno and the Barbaresco Masseria, now entirely made with fruit from Roncaglie. The Monvigliero is a wine of special interest as it is made with 60% whole cluster fruit in collaboration with colleagues over at Borgogna. I also recently read that Luca Currado Vietti actually created a shared investment in Monvigliero in 2018 (for an 8,000-square meter plot in the MGA) with a group of 10 American investors. Luca could not buy the property outright, but under the terms of the shared agreement, the investor group retains 45% of the production each year, released under the Vietti label, and Luca is left with the remaining 55%. The question is: What will he do with his share of that precious fruit?

James Suckling | JS 92
Published: Oct 2, 2022

Aromas of raspberries and citrus fruit follow through to a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins and a lightly firm finish. It is rich in proteins and tends to go into reduction. Luckily, it has been enthusiastically revived in recent years, and we have a new school of age-worthy white wines from Piedmont to enjoy. The Vietti 2022 Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Derthona works nicely because it has the sweetness of the vintage that opens it up to a medium-term drinking window, sparing you from having to wait years. Its flavors are generous and rich, with apricot and poached apple, and you get a salty mineral note as well. The wine is quite fresh with 3.05 to 3.10 pH that makes your mouth salivate. Winemaking takes it through stainless steel, wood and cement. Cement has a minimal 2% oxygen exchange compared to oak, which has a 10% exchange, and certain types of amphorae can go up to 100% air transpiration because of their porous nature. Production is 18,000 bottles. In addition to this wine, I tasted the upcoming Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Derthona Boscogrosso, which represents a special selection of fruit. Making Nebbiolo from Monvigliero is often a question of technique more than anything else, they tell me, and the learning curve is arduous. This wine sees 60% whole cluster fermentation in a single vat. Having some destemmed grapes makes fermentation easier to control. Family friend Fabio Alessandria of Comm. G.B. Burlotto offered tips on how to avoid volatile acidity or other problems with long maceration times. In fact, Vietti was able to acquire directly from Fabio Alessandria their 8,000-square-meter parcel in Monvigliero located at 300 meters in elevation on a high plain. "He passed the ball to us," says Luca Currado.

I tasted these wines with Luca Currado and Elena Penna at the Vietti winery just a short time before I would learn that they were leaving for good. The couple sold Vietti to American entrepreneur Kyle Krause in 2016. That historic sale would mark a milestone for the Barolo appellation that has appreciated in value almost exponentially since then, driving wine, grape and land prices through the roof. Luca and Elena stayed on these past years to ensure continuity in winemaking, but that handover phase finally came to an end this past winter. The couple was nice enough to call me and assure me that they were ready to leave and feel that Vietti is in very good hands. In fact, they leave an outstanding portfolio of wines, counting eight Barolos, including one new Barolo Riserva reviewed here. Elena Penna is now focused on making a popular Vermouth di Torino, and Luca Currado plants to continue in wine as a consultant. The couple still lives in their house above the winery. And because this is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still learning the ropes. For example, there is a fresh minty tone that pops up from the bouquet of the 2019 Barolo Cerequio. "That minty note was a mystery to us," Luca Currado tells me. "But then we understood that its part of Cerequio." This wine shows a firm grip on the palate that does extend out to include some textural softness, but it ultimately remains quite structured. Among the grand cru sites of La Morra, Luca Currado tells me that "Cerequio is the brother and Brunate is the sister." His wife Elena Penna adds, "We've never had two sites so close to one another show such a great difference between them."

On a personal note, I will miss them dearly. Luca and Elena are some of my favorite people in Italian wine, and I look forward to their next moves. I send them my warmest regards.

James Suckling | JS 97
Published: Jun 21, 2023

Extremely fresh and perfumed with lavender, violets and fresh plums.
