The wine spent 16 months in oak, 100% new, 80% American oak and 20% French. In fact, the wine is made very much like Grange, in that it completes fermentation in new, mainly American oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a good amount of swirling to unlock slowly emerging scents of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves, blueberry compote and cassis with fragrant suggestions of vanilla pod, violets, coconut, crushed rocks, pencil lead and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the generously fruited palate explodes in the mouth with ripe, juicy black and blue fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and a lovely burst of freshness, finishing long and spicy. It is mostly all fruit and American oak at this youthful stage, but I imagine that like Grange, its real appeal comes with bottle age. I would give it at least five years to allow the oak to marry and tertiary nuances to emerge, then drink it over the next 20 years or more. To manage expectations?this doesn't taste like Napa or South Australia. It doesn't even taste like the 2018 vintage here in Napa. The Cabernet is typically Napa (from the Oakville and Diamond Mountain District AVAs): stern and solid, flexing powerful muscle as earth and iodine notes speak much louder than fruit sweetness. The addition of Shiraz (an elite component, considered for Grange inclusion) isn’t obvious, yet its influence is profound, with a hint of ripe plum adding a vivid burst of colour to the dark flavour spectrum. The two varieties strike a happy equilibrium on the mid-palate, wrapping generous layers of rich fruit and supple texture into a seamless weave. MATTHEW LUCZY: 96 points (Tasted in Los Angeles on 28 Jan 2021) Decadent aromas of blackcurrant, black plum, hot gravel, and cocoa nib. A seamless, polished texture leads to a palate of boysenberry, raspberry, toffee and charcoal. The finish is charred, chewy and tenacious, with lingering notes of coffee and graphite – the blend is aged for 16 months only in new oak, 80% of which is American, 20% French. The 2001 Grange is one of the few vintages of this cuvee to be composed of 100% Shiraz (the others being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, and 2000). Aged 17 months in 100% American oak, and tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, the 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+.

Jancis Robinson | JR 17.5
Published: Oct 4, 2024
Drink: 2019-2042

Bottle 1: Blackish garnet. He was in fine form when we connected via videoconference on July 1 for a quick run-through of the company's newest releases. Because of time constraints, we only tasted some of the wines "together," with me completing the rest of the lineup the following day.

At my request, we started with the Chardonnays, which I think have shown remarkable improvement over the past decade or so. Gago came close to admitting as much of Yattarna, saying, "Pre-2000s, they didn't go the distance we hoped. But we're pouring the 2008s now and loving them." The goal with Yattarna has become, he said, "Pristine, beautifully framed fruit. We're not after artifact, we just want purity—but we don't want simplicity. We want layers of flavor, that length. Balance is really what it's all about." While not everyone will (or can) get on board to spend $150 for a bottle of Yattarna, readers shouldn't overlook the Bin 311 Chardonnay, which incorporates numerous lots that were culled from Yattarna and retails for a much more competitive $40.

On the red wine side of the ledger, most of the new releases are from the 2019 vintage. While it may not quite equal the heights of 2018, Gago said, "It was a good solid vintage for us. There was a bit of heat, but not like ’20 or ’08. Only a handful of 40 degrees Celsius-plus days, some rains." Standouts include the (unavailable in the U.S.) Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz, the Bin 798 RWT Shiraz and the Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. Budget-minded shoppers may want to try the Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, which, like the Bin 311 Chardonnay, represents a solid value at $40.

From earlier vintages, fans of the style will want to stock up on the 2018 St Henri Shiraz, which is truly a prodigious effort. I think it even exceeds the quality of the 2017 Grange, which is a super wine but a not-so-super Grange. A bit lighter than typical, Gago described the vintage as being, “about berry fruit, not that savory.” It’s only the seventh vintage of Grange to be 100% Shiraz, and is almost all from Barossa (86%), with the balance coming from McLaren Vale.

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention two new red wines making their debut from the 2018 vintage. Named 802.A Superblend and 802.B Superblend, these are Cabernet-Shiraz wines aimed at the luxury market and packaged accordingly, in heavyset bottles with enormous punts. The 802.A was matured in American oak and includes roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, while 802.B went into French oak and is only 55% Cabernet. The fruit is from McLaren, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully and Padthaway and comprises 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Shiraz. The cooler season has imbued the wine with a freshness and levity, which, if you asked me prior to tasting, I would have said it was impossible to imbue levity in the Bin 389! But there you have it. Epic intensity, present oak. Give it time. I have tasted 30-year-old Bin 389s in the past that have still been alive and fresh. Coming from the low-yielding 2020 vintage, a broad net was cast across McLaren Vale, Barossa and Clare to find the right mix of fruit parcels showing both concentration and complexity. With the modest addition of 3% Cabernet Sauvignon (noting that Penfolds did not release its elite Bin 707 and Bin 129 Cabernets from the 2020 vintage), this pulls tight focus on Shiraz’s primary allure – blackberry and black plum rinsed in rich mocha and dark chocolate, piqued by a dusting of cinnamon, pepper and vanilla. The initials RWT stand for Red Winemaking Trial, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a 'Trial', RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and lush texture. Looking at this as a young wine, it shows exuberant fruit power, powerful structure and a cacophony of spices. However, with age, these wines become graceful and almost ethereal. In a recent tasting of 40 vintages of St Henri going back to 1958, the wine revealed itself to be one of patience, detail and elegance. The highlights undoubtedly were 1962, 1971, 1986, 1991 and 2010. These were wines for the ages, and this 2022 will be. Built for the long haul, this will age for decades and provide plenty of enjoyment along the way. This coolness contributed to a delayed but unhurried harvest, allowing Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit to be picked at an ideal time for quality. Coonawarra experienced its own cold spells with nine days dipping below 2°C during spring. The lowest point was recorded early in September at -0.3°C. Frost fans played a critical role in protecting the vines from damage. Warmer weather returning late November to December provided perfect conditions for flowering and fruit-set, leading to uniform veraison with robust grape flavours, tannins, and colour. The Barossa Valley told a story of resilience under cool conditions with spring storms bringing winds and heavy rains including hail; nevertheless, yields exceeded early predictions. A dry but cool December extended the fruit-set period; however, this did not hinder sugar accumulation or phenolic maturity thanks to healthy canopies that retained acid well into the growing season. Padthaway faced a challenging frost event in mid-October, followed by mild weather free from significant heat spikes or harvest delays due to rain—conditions conducive for quality grape development. Wrattonbully faced its own trials with rainfall from October to April measuring 49% above long-term averages. While excess moisture slowed ripening and pushed back harvest dates slightly, fruit quality was not impacted, and “A” grade blocks produced a high-quality harvest.

Technical Specs

Alcohol: 14.5%
Closure: Cork
Grape Variety: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Shiraz
Vineyard Regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully
Acidity: 6.4 g/L
pH: 3.60
Maturation: 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 33% new oak
Producer: Penfolds
Winemaker: Peter Gago
Region: South Australia, Australia

Serving Temperature: 16–18°C
Decanting: 1–2 hours recommended when young.
Food Pairing: Excellent with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef brisket, barbecue meats, venison, hearty stews and mature hard cheeses.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/7728/6464/products/penfolds-bin-389-cabernet-shiraz-750ml.jpg?v=1760528593
penfolds-bin-407-cabernet-sauvignon-2023-750ml
Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 750ml

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a classic expression of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing the varietal's elegance, structure, and depth through Penfolds' renowned multi-regional blending philosophy. A little went into this, but the majority was from Padthaway (30%) along with McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Wrattonbully. Consequently it is not as beguiling as usual, though still well constructed, thanks to cool acidity, firm tannins and 12 months in French oak (21% new) and American oak (11%) hogsheads.
