M Marengo Barolo Bricco Viole DOCG 2019 750ml

The 2019 M. Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a standout from a boutique La Morra estate, blending floral elegance with serious structure. With top scores across the board (96 RP, 96 Decanter), it offers layers of violet, cassis, and spice wrapped in fine, chewy tannins. Dark, concentrated, and built to age beautifully—this is Barolo with both charm and muscle.

This is a wine I always love, thanks to its distinctive grace and floral notes of wild rose and lilac. The M. Marengo 2019 Barolo Bricco delle Viole shows more heft and concentration in this growing season, and it's visible in its darker color. The bouquet is also compact and more robust at the same time with cassis, light spice and candied orange peel. Mineral dustings make for an elegant end note, and the tannins show the firmness of youth. Production is 6,000 bottles.
Marco Marengo and his family have recently added to their holdings in the famed Valmaggiore vineyard, with steep flanks and sandy soils, in the Roero winemaking district.

Marengo is a small estate based in La Morra, managed by Marco Marengo and his family. A boutique winery with a slightly modern style – small barrels, vinification without submerged cap – they claim vines in some of the best MGAs. This Bricco delle Viole 2019 shows all the freshness expected from this MGA, with sweet violet soaked with pomegranate, liquorice and smoky woodland. Dark, concentrated and full of sucrosity on the palate, it has chewy, ripe tannins, great volume, and quite a youthful, sticky finish. Precise extraction should make for a great wine in time.

Pretty, scented. Is it autosuggestion to find violets here? That’s on the nose but on the palate there is an ironclad framework of tannin! Destined for a very long life, surely?
