Chateau Beychevelle St-Julien 1999 750ml
The 1999 Château Beychevelle is a mature, elegantly styled Left Bank classic showing Beychevelle’s hallmark finesse. Now in its prime drinking window, the 1999 delivers supple cassis fruit, soft fully integrated tannins, and the balanced, graceful profile typical of Saint-Julien. While lighter and less dense than top vintages, it offers refined aromatics with notes of blackberry, espresso, and sandalwood. A smooth, ready-to-enjoy Bordeaux that reflects the estate’s tradition of poise and complexity.

St-Julien was spared the hail storms that occured in early September, unlike St-Émilion, but it still had to deal with the rain that arrived mid-month, just as harvests were getting underway. To be honest this was the wine I was most expecting to be underpowered, but there is a well-defined, supple frame here holding the cassis fruits. They lack a density that you will find in 1996 or 2000 Beychevelle, but this is in a great drinking window right now with soft and fully integrated tannins, and the classic St Julien sense of balance. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. This has an interesting nose with blackberry, espresso, a touch of coca and sandalwood. It does lack just a little fruit intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, just a little green on the entry but good acidity, firm tannins but then lacking complexity and finesse towards the finish. It is a little uninspiring. Go for the ’49! Drink now-2015. Tasted June 2009.
