Segla Margaux 2016 750ml

A structured and polished Bordeaux from Margaux, the 2016 Segla blends 53% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, with 20% new oak. Aromas of blackcurrant, kirsch, prune, and subtle menthol lead to a medium-to-full-bodied palate with supple, silky tannins, bright red fruits, and a hint of spice. Toasty and vegetal nuances add complexity, finishing long and fresh with floral accents. Elegant, focused, and well-composed, this wine shows excellent aging potential through 2030–2037.

This is one of the most structured Séglas for a long time with full body, a sold core of fruit and firm, chewy tannins that are polished and focused. Tight at the end. Hazelnut finish. Drink in 2024.

The 2016 Segla had been blended for a month when I tasted it with the exception of 14 experimental barrels. It comprises of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 53% Merlot with 1% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, matured in 20% new oak. It has a very polished and quite opulent bouquet with kirsch, blackberry, a touch of glycerine and just a hint of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin, silky smith in texture with a dash of spice on the back palate, and a compact but long finish.

Toasty aromas of blackcurrant, prune, rosemary and thyme. The palate is vegetal with grippy tannins, bright red fruits, and a fresh finish with floral and spiced nuances.

53% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.
Very dark crimson. A little note of balsam and this seems more youthful than the 2019 Ségla but just as well composed. Good, sophisticated winemaking at non-grand-vin prices … just a little angular.
